It's a free world. The shoppers could just quit and make Instacart bankrupt. Who's going to pay $25 + instacart overhead to buy some groceries?
Forgive me but rant ahead: I wish it were a free world, truly. It's not because a few 1%ers who never actually earned the capital they invest in corporations (like Instacart) are forcing our choices. We work way more hours for considerably less money adjusted for inflation than any other generation in history. Many of us don't even have time to grocery shop or look for individual people who can run errands for us. We also can't afford to provide living wages to other people bc we're barely earning them ourselves - if we're earning them. And so too often, the only way folks who need some kind of income in a pinch can make any money at all is to work for Instacart, Uber, etc. It's the folks receiving billions of dollars for squeezing as much labor for as little money as possible from these people - and most of us - who make this not a free country. Ok, done. Now back to our regularly scheduled deal talking Smilie

They pay the shoppers like $6 or $7 dollars per customer. There is no way anyone would go back to a store for that kind of money. I don't think that even factors in gas or anything like that. It's not even minimum wage without tips. It's crazy how exploitative both Instacart and Instacart customers are of the shoppers. I've looked into this just out of curiosity and it's wild. You ought to just pay an individual you know $25 to $50 per shopping trip. Chances are you will spend way less money than you would buying through instacart and that person would actually have enough pay to make sure everything is correct and to your liking.
It is NOT $7 per customer...lol. COME ON MAN. Try $20-$25,

Trust me, it really isn't. That's what I assumed too until I started looking into it. It took me by surprise to see that most of these people were getting around $7 dollars before tips. They do appear to offer some kind of mileage reimbursement from higher mileage trips and a bonus for whenever there is a lot of demand but I don't really get their calculation. Here are just a few that popped up in google for people posting that they received a good tip. Again, I'm all about a free market and personal choice, I just don't like a business that's never even intended to succeed in the first place and chooses to use legally gray and morally questionable methods to skirt employment laws. I pay my employees well, including my one 1099 employee. Believe me, I understand the desire to try minimize employment expenses for the sake of growing the business. It generally has the opposite effect long term. If you want your business to grow, you have to be willing to pay people enough to stick around long term. Not every employee is actually expendable without significantly impacting certain aspects of the business. Most companies try way too hard to always be perceived as dominant and without anything to gain from any specific employee that they don't properly evaluate what that person brings to the table. But this company, and many others like it, it's not even really a business, it's just a long con with the sole purpose of getting bought by a larger entity.

I get $10 off $35 coupons all the time so I feel like the Express membership is a waste. With the coupons, it's like free delivery ($5.99) and pays for the tip.

Sometimes you get 20 off 50, 30 off 50 it's worth at times not always and they do charge 2 bucks as a service charge (in kansas ) even for subscripted.

That's not really how it works. Instacart, along with most of these 1099 employers doing deliveries or whatever else, intentionally operates at an extreme loss in order to overexpand and corner the marklet. Essentially, they secure funding from some very wealthy individual or from an investment firm. Use that for the initial outlay and over insane short term incentives to attract customers and "employees" and blow through the funding. They give customers insane deals that destroy competition that don't have a hundred million in cash to burn. Then, they get more funding stating that they need more because of all the new customers. At this point, they raise their prices a little and drastically cut pay to the "employees" which increases their own funds as a business which they present to the investors and ask if they want to reinvest so they can expand to more markets. They then take that money and just go ham with it in every market they can, again, in order to crush competitors that can't simply outlast them. Thus continuing the cycle until every market is theirs or the company is purchased. Once every market is theirs, they keep their prices just under the place where competition could actually form again and just ride it out on easy. Essentially, the "employees" get the bait and switch almost immediately and customers get the shaft long term since they are the only game in town by the end of it. I doubt most instacart employees do more than 5 or 6 deliveries before they decide not to do it anymore but that's exactly what instacart banks on. They want them to give it a shot, get hosed, and quit doing it because there is always someone else who needs money enough to give it a shot, get hosed, and quit.

As far as a site, taskrabbbit seems like it's a great option for something like this.
This is absolutely correct and the blue print for most 1099 companies (uber, instacart, lyft, etc).

Their end game is to either be bought out by some large company or to be listed on the stock exchange and make a ton of money with their IPO. There is no real plan to turn a profit using conventional methods (profits, gains, net margins, etc).

Any suggestions for how much to tip an instacart shopper? Trying to see if this will be worth it with fees and tips all in. If we have to tip servers 20% just for being a couple of plates to the table (some places they don't even take orders and we order and pay on the tabletop menu), then how much do we tip shoppers for driving to the store, struggling for parking if it's Costco it can take a lot of time to just park, then going into the store, selecting each item, standing in line
Based on this shopper on reddit, the going rate for tips is over 50%.

Instacart does not markup. Your store does.
Quote from Blockanese :
Exactly. Prices are the same for me either through instacart or in store. No difference
This isn't really correct. It's instacart's market expansion tactics specifically that cause the uneven markup. Instacart takes a percentage of every order completed using their platform from the stores. Instacart offers certain stores discounted fees, no fees, and even pays certain stores to be on their platform, particularly for exclusivity. This is why there is sometimes a discrepancy. If instacart is taking a 30% cut from one store but another isn't getting a cut taken out, of course the one store that keeps 100% of the money from the items sold doesn't need to upcharge. It gives them an extremely competitive edge. The actual stores have much less to do with it, although some could probably negotiate much better deals if they really tried.

This whole money losing modeling of businesses is just stupid. They think they will all be Amazon-here is a clue: They won't be. None of them. Uber and Lyft's losses are mind numbing.

So why are these shoppers still working for Instacart, amidst "The Great Resignation" and Help Wanted signs everywhere?

Question about the deal, why is instacart express worth it?

I always order at least $35 so the delivery is free, and costco same day prices are mostly $1 more per item (except meats, wow instacart marks up meats like crazy).
