I would be interested if Instacart didn't markup products in addition to their fee.

Agree. Even with big discount coupon offers, there prices are still to high.

I love grocery delivery. It's a bit more expensive than going out to the store but I'll pay to skip the crappy experience of grocery store shopping. The part I dislike is when they get me way too little or too much of something or crappy looking meat or veggies. Instacart does make it easy to get refunded for a problem, but they don't actually send the shopper back to make it right. I've ordered again just to get the one thing they messed up that I needed. Still worth the trade offs for me.

And this is the problem with all of it in a nutshell...Instacart, Doordash, Uber, Lyft...whatever. It is not a sustainable model or way for drivers/shoppers, etc. to make an actual living. And yet they continue to exist because there has been, so far, an endless supply of replacement people to take the place of those who come to this realization on their own.
I am a big fan of instacart, doordash, ubereats etc. I don't like going outside or driving. And the convenience is worth the extra price. And I don't agree that it's not sustainable. I have first hand family members who don't have such a cushy tech job like me and they bought a decent house (of course not in Bay Area), drive decent cars etc doing amazon warehouse hours and mixing it with instacart/doordash side gigs. Do they work harder than me and earn less? Yes. But they live comfortable life and they don't complain. They are actually pretty happy while some politicians keep bitching about Amazon.

Even with the 5% non-member upcharge this seems like a good deal

So let me get this straight. You are already paying to shop at Costco (membership fee) then pay another premium (up charge plus InstaCrap membership fee) plus tip for someone to do the shopping?!?! This isn't slick- it's foolish.

Get off your lazy butts and do your own shopping.
What is your "hourly rate?" Mine is $60/hr. If I can pay someone $5-$10 (via a tip) to save me an hour+ of grocery shopping while working from
home, driving to the store and using their car's gas and I choose a grocery store on InstaCart that doesn't mark up their prices (there are MANY good options in my area that don't have any mark up) it's worth it. I've used InstaCart 90 times in 2021. Time savings is worth it. (For any haters, I tip 10-15% on all deliveries)

there are MANY good options in many areas that don't have any or very little mark up. Just have figure out which stores have no mark up and only use those stores (Calif. Bay Area: Raley's, FoodCo, Sprouts, Smart & Final)

Edit^
Meant to say Lucky's not Raley's

Edit edit: Raley's also has no markup lol (but is more expensive, in general)

Try Walmart delivery for same prices as in store easy to use once you learn how to choose substitutions amd easy to refund if something is wrong

Huge +1! I don't like the fact that most of the delivery services moved this "double dipping" models, either through tips or through or separate pricing.

There is a markup per Costco "Costco item prices are marked up higher than your local warehouse. Instacart uses the markup to pay for their delivery service. The order minimum is $35."

Easy to refund in instacart as well. As for Walmart, the chances of getting what you ordered are not great from my experience. They are constantly out of stock on many items.

It can be. If you don't want to go out during a pandemic or if the weather is bad it can save you a hassle.

They pay the shoppers like $6 or $7 dollars per customer. There is no way anyone would go back to a store for that kind of money. I don't think that even factors in gas or anything like that. It's not even minimum wage without tips. It's crazy how exploitative both Instacart and Instacart customers are of the shoppers. I've looked into this just out of curiosity and it's wild. You ought to just pay an individual you know $25 to $50 per shopping trip. Chances are you will spend way less money than you would buying through instacart and that person would actually have enough pay to make sure everything is correct and to your liking.

probably worth it if it means I don't get shot by some armed MAGA over masking inside safeway.

Keywords: including tips. That's where people's disconnect seems to be. Almost no instacart shopper is making 45/hour. That's the same thing that most companies do in job postings stating they will pay $50k to $75K. No you aren't, you are paying at most $55k but you want to at least try to get someone overqualified for the position to feel like you are getting a deal on their work. There might be someone you'd pay $75k to, but that person could easily get much more elsewhere. From what I can tell, unless there are more than 50 unique items, a bunch of heavy stuff, or higher mileage, the extreme vast majority of instacart full service shoppers are getting $7 per customer before tips and can only get groceries for one customer per shopping trip.

Also, just to be clear, you used the, obviously paid for, featured snippet that google now includes. If you click on literally any other link when you google that phrase, they all pretty much completely refute that, especially gridwise [gridwise.io]. Gridwise seems to be a tracking software that these companies use, or maybe it's the shoppers, I don't know. It clearly shows around a $16-17/hour figure for early 2021, which was probably higher than it is now. That includes tips, but is also before the 15.3% SS and Medicare taxes, income tax after deductions, gas, car maintenance and repairs, supplies, business insurance and higher car insurance, etc. That's also average for all markets. Some markets are even worse than that figure while others are obviously higher.

Edit: They were also on a downward trend in payout in early 2020 with an immediate but largely stagnant uptick in pay in march 2020. What this appears to be is that people started tipping more. February 2020 was likely down due to COVID fears and panic buying clearing out grocery shelves. That doesn't change that it's super obvious the only reason anyone is making even $17/hour(really more like $11-12 after expenses) with instacart is due to the pandemic and general stay at home guidelines.
