Man I would love to borrow one of these for a week or two... but can't see myself spending $500+ for one.

I bought one a couple of years ago and scanned 3500 family photos over 2 days. It was a really cathartic experience in that I was able to have my dad explain the history of some of the photos — he really enjoyed it. I highly recommend it since I never would have been able to do this with a standard scanner.

What about the quality of the scan? I assumed that it's always be subpar due to the speed/quality ratio.

I found it to be fantastic. I scanned at the highest resolution and 4x6 photos are about 40mb each (4000 x 6000 pixels or about a 24 megapixel photo). Again, I was really impressed but I know the purchase price was high. I wanted a digital version of all our photos in case there was a fire. Now I have all the photos stored in multiple locations.
