Anybody have any experience using them with prescription pet food, I mean for the script?

We use a local vet and Chewy currently for urinary food, but I don't like our vet, and want to move on anyway.

Drives me absolutely bonkers that cat food requires a prescription and is $90 a bag. I understand the high price, maybe, but locking it behind a prescription? What am I going to do with this food that is illegal?

wait no, what CAN i do with it that's illegal?

Don't you still need prescriptions from a vet? Or do you have to be a vet to call them for this freebie?

No horse meds, if that's your pet of choice. It's just dogs and cats.

IMO they lock it behind a prescription so they can keep the prices artificially high. Most prescription diets are a sham, okay maybe not a sham but definitely overpriced and over-prescribed. Some prescription diets are wholly unnecessary (like a weight control diet - just do portion control with regular food, preferably something high protein because that helps with satiety) but others are very important (like a renal diet). When your vet suggests a prescription diet, ask them why it's being prescribed and if there are alternatives you can try first.

In your case, I would ask your vet about transitioning your cat to a high quality canned food. The main benefit that a prescription diet has over a regular food is that it's been clinically tested for a specific health concern but in the case of urinary tract problems, any good quality canned food should help.

Read this and pay particular attention to the prescription diet section: https://catinfo.org/feline-urinar...-diseases/

It's written by a vet with decades of experience and I've found her info to be incredibly helpful as a cat owner.

Agree with this...

YMMV: my cat was on hydrolyzed prescription food due to food allergy. Come to find out my cat is not allergic to the protiens but rather the carbs, including the carbs in the hydrolyzed prescription diet foods

Same here, blows my mind that I need a prescription for my dogs food. Just another way for the industry to make a buck

I have always believed that it was so they could keep the prices high, I just haven't seen anywhere actually verify what high-quality non-prescription foods would do the same thing

And really, how could they? They can't be on the hook if XYZ brand kills my cat even though cat might just as well have kicked the bucket using the RX food

so, we take no chances

My dog is on a hydrolyzed diet for skin issues at $85 a bag. His skin has improved, but I think more because I stopped giving him a particular treat that I thought was the culprit. I now mix his hydrolyzed food w/beneful wet food and he isn't having any issues.

Checked out the Rx pet meds I routinely purchase, Apoquel, Sildenafil, Meloxicam, fluoxitine, tramadol, cerenia, clavacillin and they are all way overpriced compared to the pet pharmacy I use. Check out Allivet
