Well, right from the start it's not the price here that it was when they reviewed it on April 21, 2021. At the high price, it "left us wanting more consistent performance". But, what about at half price?
Also, their test was using a 300 Mbps network, and the only other issues they had was the physical size and the 2.4 GHz network bandwidth and how it performed when they stress tested (playing a game while simultaneously streaming ten 8k videos) it on a 300 Mbps network. Didn't exactly extensively test it at the router's higher end specs, such as using a Gigabit or 2 Gigabit network. How about 8 people gaming simultaneously? How about listing what potential obstacles they had when testing the "far" distance? How many other 2.4 GHz devices are pounding away in their airspace during the test? Hardly scientific, thorough, or conclusive.
If you don't care about the size (which is hard to avoid when there are EIGHT ethernet ports and it's TRI-BAND), or 2.4 GHz, what exactly is the reason to avoid this?

1. Router wasn't centrally located in the home (it's nearly at one end of the house, in fact).
2. We have smart outdoor cameras and irrigation controllers, so we need the WiFi to reach more than just within the home. Distance + more walls led to poor connection when we had just a single router.
Not sure if either of those applies to you.
I'm interested in this, but am a bit hesitant of spending $200+ if it isn't going to be much of an upgrade over the T-Mobile Cellspot I have.
I have no throughput issues with Merlin connected to a Raspberry Pi 4 with USB 3.0 external drives.
TL;DR - Save your money.

Also is this a router and a modem ? Or do I need to purchase a separate modem ? Sorry again.
This is not a modem. If it was a modem also, it would be listed in the specs.

I got a really good deal on it back in the day when Discover had price protection, so I didn't shop around other models or competitors, but I'm really happy with it. If not for the price protection angle I had, I might have even opted to pay a little more for the one with 2 units rather than a satellite: https://smile.amazon.co
I have searched all over the web for help.
Any ideas anyone?
I am particularly interested in if we can block new device connections unless we Approve them manually by logging into the Admin page? And offers some sort of Parental control?
Is Costco warranty 90 days or couple years?

Tp-link app gives notifications of new devices, I believe you can block or require app to notify you for approval.
Parental controls included for free for lifetime.
Has just about every bell and whistle you can imagine except for as I noted with no Ethernet backhaul.
Hope that helps.
