In order to swap cards and avoid re downloading all your games:

1. POWER OFF the switch (not sleep mode, all the way off)
2. Remove SD card, pop in new one
3. Boot system and format SD card
4. Power off again and remove
5. USING A PC, copy all the files from the old SD card to the new one
6. Put new SD into Switch and power on

For a single user, it's an alright deal if you need the SD card. $20 is the standard price for an individual online membership so the card would cost $15. Family plan is meant for sharing so you could add on a few folks to take advantage of your online membership and even charge them a few bucks like another SDer suggested.

This doesn't include the expansion pack upgrade which is a separate cost. The upgrade gives you access to all game expansion packs for free in addition to official Sega and N64 emulators.

We had family profiles and an individual membership for the past 2 years and it worked fine. Only the main account could play online or access the NES games etc. But, that was fine. For everything else they just played their own profiles when they wanted their own save (Mario odyssey etc) and to play online they shared the online profile (splatoon, smash bros etc).

This year we got a 2nd switch so I am upgrading to family plan so the kids can play online together under different profiles.

Since the Nintendo online thing is digital, you aren't able to use gift cards. I remember trying to buy something digitally with a gift card before and it kept canceling my orders. I asked them why and that's what they said.

They will give you a prorated value of your existing membership and you play the difference, but it will cancel your existing non-expansion membership....which means if you already stacked beyond 12 months, this process will cancel all of that and put all the prorated months value into a new 12 month expansion membership.

I don't think you can add to expansion plan.
You can switch SD cards, sync game saves to cloud, and you probably need to redownload some games. In 3DS I think you could just copy contents manually on your computer, not sure if you can do it in Switch or if it's encrypted somehow.

I already have a Nintendo account (free, to login to my switch). My brother just bought my niece a switch for Christmas. Would I be able to have him buy the family plan and set it up under the account he created for my niece, and then invite/add my current account to the family plan?

Or would all accounts need to be newly created/originated under the family plan?

You each have individual plans. You would need to have one of you buy a family plan and invite the other to be a member of the family account.
