Consumer Reports rates air filters for airflow resistance. Air filters above MERV 10 perform best and depending on brand, still offer good airflow resistance. Wire cutter found similar results. A MERV 8 isn't doing a whole lot, especially for allergies. Above MERV 13 is what you should avoid for residential as these hospital grade ones would be less airflow for HVAC. But even MERV 12 & 13 were rated well for airflow resistance. Key is avoid having them in for too long and getting too much blockage.

While HVAC techs typically recommend against MERV 8+, there "is a mountain of owner testimony that MERV 11, 12, and even 13 filters have worked just fine in their systems for years. As well, an often-cited comprehensive independent test of MERV 8 to 13 filters' effects on HVAC airflow and energy consumption (a proxy for how hard the equipment is working) concluded that even "if no accommodations are made for the greater pressure drop of high-MERV filters, air flow and energy penalties are not likely to be severe—at least, not until the filter is loaded with dirt."

Thus manufactures and techs are probably more on the cautious side to be extra sure. Again, don't let it get loaded with dirt before changing.

Last thread many people reported received 1 filter instead 12 filters in a big box.
Been using them for over two years on two of my units with no issues whatsoever. I tend to have to replace them every 6 weeks instead of 3 months because they do a great job at capturing dust, and thus start turning gray at that 6 week mark.

I don't like buying this many at a time because I have to store them. I usually get buy two get one free when Ace Hardware runs it every few months. That makes it 3 filters for $10. They are merv 8 also.

This exact thing happened to me which is unbelievable cause they send the box for 12 and it's incredulity light so any employee with sense would be suspicious they're all in there. You then go through customer service and they'll offer you a comparable 12 pack and you have to return to the store with the onsie and feel like a scams.

my furnace uses 4" think filter. Can I buy these and maybe put 2 or 3 back to back in or 1 is enough?
Many people would upgrade to 2",4", or 6" if they could just for the longer times between changes and lower cost for the filter when deals aren't up once you take in account for how long they last. 4" is roughly 6-9 months with 5-6" filters 9-12 months change intervals.

I have these. The filter media on them is good. The only issue I have with them is the cardboard frames are really thin and flimsy. They buckle upward in my HVAC unit. And if they get even the smallest amount of water drip on them, the frames collapse.

I wish they would make the frames with thicker cardboard. The frames on these are almost paper thin.

This!
In addition, I've noticed that they're a little undersized as well, more so than other hvac air filter brands. Such that unfiltered airflow may occur around the perimeter. I suspect that it's not uncommon for larger size filters, say 20x30 or others, to collapse completely.

Apparently too little airflow by these better quality filters can cause damage to your unit. HVAC techs don't recommend them. MERV 8 might not be too bad as I think it is the middle of the road.

I think FPR 5 is the same as Merv 8. That's what I'm finding online. FPR is a different measurement but it's what's used by Home Depot and some of the "other brands". They make different qualities up to "10" where merv goes 1-13 instead of 1-10. Even Rheem and some of the name brand companies list both. My last one was a Merv 8/FPR 4 from Rheem. I guess an HDX 5 would be slightly better than a Merv 8 by that standard. I could be wrong. I'm no pro..

How is this a deal when it is still more expensive the home depots HDX at $3.3/filter?

Merv 8 is HDX's FPR 4-5. They're about the same. Thanks for your post. I cancelled and ordered Home Depot. Nice find.
