Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80ยฐF. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. Seeding 2 weeks before or after that easy-to-remember holiday gives your new seedlings time to build strong roots before the winter. Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season grasses because of its moderate temperatures and heavier rainfall.

Depends on where you live, I have had success with spring seeding a few times in the Chicagoland area.

Fall is the best, seeding in winter is possible just like spring. However you are hoping for a small percentages of seeds to actually sprout next spring, you are fighting things like, washout, birds and weather. When they say it's 98% germination rate that is in a perfect test environment. In the real world if you get 50% of them to sprout in fall you will get lower percentage in winter/summer/spring.
Don't forget tenacity or Scott's starter fertilizer with tenacity (mesotriome) it get put down with the seed and does a great job on weeds while not causing any issues for the grass seed. Stuff works great.
If your spring is above 80 stick to fall seeding. Unless you can keep it soaked constantly.
Really nice grass seed you can find locally, I have used it and it's very good. Check batches when purchasing I have seen some bags with zero weed percentage and some with small amounts of weed seed. Always check the weed contents on grass seed if it's high run away. If it lists any noxious weedsโฆ.run as fast as you can. I like GCI seeds great quality, fresh and zero weeds.
Maybe your home has some really good established grass. In my parents home the backyard never had to re seeded but the front yard had a lot of traffic on it and would need to be done occasionally. If you are a lawn nut it's just one of those things you do at the end of the summer season to get a head start on next season. Any spots that aren't covered in grass become covered in weeds.
