Free Tax Filing Online - $0 State/Federal | Credit Karma Tax® $0

The last few years I did my taxes through Credit Karma, which was totally free both for federal and state, as well as online filing. This year the service is now under "Cashapp Tax" but will remain completely free. I've been super happy with the service in the past, and haven't had any issues.

Thanks for sharing OP! This seems like a great option for most people, and best of all, free. Smilie

I dig a small bit of digging and here are some of the scenario's and forms they don't support, just as a heads up:

Quote :
There are some situations we don't support. These are:
  • Filing your state taxes without filing your Federal taxes using Cash App Taxes first. You can file your Federal taxes without filing state taxes, or you can file your Federal taxes with us first and come back later to file your state taxes. We don't support filing only your state taxes.
  • Multiple state filings, part-year state filing, or non-resident state filing are not supported by Cash App Taxes.
  • Prior year return filings
  • Foreign earned income
  • Underpayment penalty calculations/payments
  • Married filing separately returns in community property states. See the list of community property states in the introduction of IRS Publication 550, Community Property [irs.gov].

There is also a list of federal forms they don't support, so best to check that you don't need any of those forms: Link [cash.app]

I didn't see an income (AGI) limit, so at long as you don't have have one of the above scenarios or need one of the forms they don't support, even higher income folks should be eligible to use this Cash App Taxes option. For those with an AGI under $72,000, there may be additional free options via the Free File Alliance IRS partners [irs.gov] (not available yet, IRS site says some time in January).

FYI: For those who have been eligible (AGI under 72k) to use the Free File version of TurboTax in the past, the company has decided to end that free product line version.

I've used Credit Karma's tax service for the last two years and have generally been happy with it. Keep in mind that with free services like this, CK is intentionally collecting as much information about you as possible in order to sell you other services they offer/have referrals for. You are the product - it's how they're able to make it 'free' to folks filing their taxes.

This doesn't bother me too much here (clearly, I've used it for several years) but always good to be aware of.

free is free (well, my data shouldn't be but it is), but this is some Rube Goldberg stuff:

Scan the QR Code to log in and use Cash App Taxes
If you don't already have it, download Cash App.
Open the QR Scanner in Cash App or use your phone's camera.
Scan the entire QR code.
Log in with your phone, then come back to your computer to use Cash App Taxes.
