However, open headphones tend to have a larger sound stage.
I've listened to the original 700, the 900x and the 1000x (not part of this deal)/
The 900x was a definite upgrade over the 700, though only a small one, so get the 700x if you're on a budget. I can't speak to the 500x personally. The 1000x simply isn't worth it over the 900x, in my opinion.
For people considering, here are some pros and cons.
Pros:
Fantastic mid- to mid-treble. Vocals can take on an airy, ethereal quality and sound absolutely amazing. Likewise, many orchestral works also sound amazing.
Incredibly wide soundstage. Maybe too wide- like if you took a stage in an orchestral hall and doubled the width, that's kind what these feel like.
Great imaging. Combined with the wide soundstage, it feels like you can pinpoint where sounds are coming from. In my experience, you won't find a better set of headphones for competitive gaming anywhere near this price range. You should easily be able to hear footsteps coming from behind you.
Some people find them extremely comfortable. This is a big if, but if they fit, they're light on your head with very little clamping pressure.
Extremely easy to drive. While a dedicated amp is always nice, you will have no problem driving these off your phone/laptop/etc.
Cons:
Fit is extremely hit or miss. These have very little clamping pressure and don't fit well for a lot of people. For some, they will straight up fall off your head.
Long, non-detacachable cable. I know adding connections is anathema to some audiophiles, but I really dislike when nicer headphones don't have the ability to detach and use your own cable. The cable on these things is also very long and will get in your way. This is far and away my biggest pet peeve with these headphones (they fit me fine).
Very bass light. This line of headphones is well known for having the bass taper off. I personally like the sound signature for a lot of musical genres, but avoid these if you only listen to bass heavy music (and view these more as a complementary set of headphones unless you almost completely eschew bass-heavy music).
High sound leakage. This should be expected with open-back headphones, but don't plan on using these when you're around other people.
Overall, I'm a pretty big fan of this line, but I view them more as a complementary set of headphones than a daily driver. I think you could make a compelling argument that they're a nice complement to the ATH-M line of headphones, since those tend to have a v-shaped sound signature and cover all the weakness of the ATH-AD line. They're great headphones for gaming, and I'd very easily recommend this and a cheap USB mic over gaming headsets in this price range (don't expect you use something like an Antlion Modmic, though... no detachable cable). At this price, they're also a nice entry point into audiophile-ish gear, especially since you don't need a dedicated amp. Since the sound profile is so distinct, they should make it easy to listen critically to differences in different headsets.

yea it's open and noise leaks, but it's not like it's a speaker.
Last time they replaced a cup, speaker, the whole cable, the arm that holds the cup and the whole head band for ~100 with labor. Pretty great.

but she has sensitive hearing. if i put the dial above 10 in the car, she complains
felt almost like i wasn't wearing cans
The A900 and AD900 are also different headphones.
*Better meaning more accurate in this context. Sound is subjective, so only use objective measurements as a guide to how something might sound to judge against your personal listening preferences.
