The built in cable is labeled "in and out". Is this thing a brick if that built in cable wears out?

It looks like that is the case. There is a second USB C port, but that seems to be for output only.

I suspected that but thought I'd ask for a second opinion. I hate built-in cables for this reason. Sure they're convenient, but what happens when they break?

I have this model. The usb c port is both in/out. This also supports pass through charging.
