I stopped all this garbage once I moved to Korean wash or dish cloths or whatever they are called. Much more cleaner (use and hang to dry) and no more smelly sponges. Just as an example:

But do they have the same level of scrubbing aggressiveness as the green side of these traditional dish sponges?

Yes, if you do gently you can use them on Teflon coated nonstick surfaces without scratching them. By applying some pressure you can get rid of stubborn food particles (I boil milk, make rice, pastas). Its clean appearance and dry feeling are the positive features for me.
