Is this setup and forget? Can it have water supply connected and continuously produce ice? We got the $90 portable one (Frigedaire) at Costco as well, works well but have to put water to keep making ice.

I got that from the manual. Pretty sure it stated to run a cleaning cycle with a table spoon of bleach mixed with water every few weeks immediately followed by a drain and fresh water clean 3x. Vinegar to descale as needed outside of that.

So far I have only run bleach cycles, approximately once a month when I clean the entire unit. I haven't noticed any build up on mine and always used filtered water but will eventually descale it with vinegar.

the process to create pellet ice is more complicated. it freezes the water as it pushes it through a tube to keep it porous and cylindrical. so it's like shaved ice on top of an ice maker. not that it should be this much, but the closest built-in unit I found was like 2k or more. it is definitely partially a niche market but I have an original firstBuild version and it has been going strong for over 3 years.

This is the way. Chick fil a or sonic are good places to buy this type of ice. You can actually get buckets for $5 which is even cheaper than the bags. For me there is one on the way from work and it's far more convenient to grab a bucket and toss it in the chest freezer to have nugget ice always available than having to make it fresh every day and dealing with the opal cleaning and maintenance. If you don't have any near you then this route is the only way.

But just to be clear for those that don't know, nugget ice is far superior to regular ice cubes. Think shaved ice pellets instead of jawbreakers, yes it's worth it

I bought the XL Frigidaire countertop icemaker for $159.99 in November of 2020. Costco now carries it for $199.99 straight price. I love it. It might not have wi-fi of the GE but it has worked great for our family and is currently $350.00 cheaper. It has a two-year warrantee when bought with a Citi Card. We bring it out when we have company over or on very hot days when our refrigerator ice maker won't keep up. It has a large 1.32-gallon water reservoir. It can produce 48lbs of ice in a 24hr period. It also can make a batch of ice in less than 7 minutes! I was on the fence when we purchased this icemaker, but it has been one of the better purchases I have made at Costco. Applause

The reviews for the 1.0 worried me out of trying that one. It could be an expensive boat anchor once warranty ends.

If I want to try this 2.0, there is no better opportunity than through Coscto w/their Citicard. I believe that factor alone makes up for the ID me savings mentioned before, through GE directly. Too many things can go wrong.

Oddly, tao tronics also has one, do not think it has a side tank, but it's vastly less expensive and makes chewy ice. Reviews are decent, so would not say they have the market cornered at all

I got the opal version of this a few years back and my issue with it was that it made all my carbonated drinks (sodas) instantly flat. The flavor of the sodas were just instantly gone. Did anyone else have a similar issue?

I assume this new version is much better. Did anyone have this issue with this new model?
