There's usually an asterisk following the MAX designation which refers to fine print along the lines of:
*Maximum initial battery voltage (measured without a workload) is 20 volts. Nominal voltage is 18.

I bought one, then the next week they had a one day deal where they threw in the circular saw for total $199.
Returned and rebought
HD had a deal recently where they threw in the oscillating tool instead of the circular saw for total $199.
Just FYI

The XR and Max will actually pack more power, however do lack the slim body style of the atomic. Also the max will have the nicer battery most of the time.
Which models in each line line should we look for?

XR has a metal chuck on the drill.
I dunno. I bought a 2 tool XR set for $220 with 2 2 amp batteries. I'm happy with it.
I'm planning on keeping 10 years.
Would I have been happy with the atomic, maybe?
I did a lot of electrical work with my last drill and drilled 5/8 and 3/4 holes through 2x10s. Having a more powerful drill made a difference there.
