XRs are MAX, Atomics are MAX, Extremes are MAX, all DeWalt battery powered tools are MAX. MAX simply refers to them citing the battery voltage at full charge without a load whereas other companies use the operating voltage.

There's usually an asterisk following the MAX designation which refers to fine print along the lines of:
*Maximum initial battery voltage (measured without a workload) is 20 volts. Nominal voltage is 18.

Since there are different models out there, is the Atomic Max a recommended one?

I have a Makita 12v impact driver and drill. Any good updating to this one? Makita are brushed and bulky.

The atomic line is a lower line, but it's a good value - just depends what you need.

I purchased this set used-like-new for $100 about a year ago from tools_direct on ebay which sells home depot returns I believe. They came new in box. If you need "new" then this is the typical sale price.

The newest compact Makita beats the pants off of M12 Milwaukee and the newest 12v DeWalt. (according to Torque Channel on the tube)
And yes, the same DeWalt beats the M12 also. It's only a 10% difference, but it's still a difference.
Of the 3, the Makita is still the largest tool, followed by yellow, then red.

You need to look at DeWalts lineup to see what fits your needs.
There's way to many impacts to compare these days and there are too many differences below half inch and 3/8 between teams red, blue, yellow, etc to just give blanket statements about one over the other, in my estimation.

That link is to what is essentially a forum post by an uninformed consumer and is incorrect.

It's pretty lame. Even Ryobi's kit is 1.5 Ah. This is why I went with the Milwaukee holiday deal ($229 kit 2892-22CT) after tool return hack making it ~$120 before tax. That at least came with 2.0 Ah batts and was one of the better Holiday deals for a brushless starter combo kit. Only thing I don't like is Milwaukee is pretty pricy overall and Dewalt seems to have better deals constantly throughout the year.

I'm thinking about getting the DCF850 impact with 5.0 Ah hack for $110 and pick up the drill only kit or wait for another drill deal. I am a fairly recent homeowner looking to start their tool collection for typical home needs. My dad has Dewalts so I'm trying to be on the same platform when we do projects together or need to borrow a more specialized tool.

Lost of comments here that don't really provide much help… This is a pretty dang good price for a solid drill/driver set. If you will put heavy use into them as part of your job, then you probably already know that you're better off spending a few more dollars to get the top of the line XR models. However, if you're a homeowner and/or woodworking hobbyist, then these are for you. Compact size, plenty of power, and quality backed by a strong brand.

I got this set from Home Depot during Black Friday. It's really impressive. Powerful and compact. You can't go wrong. Glad the price on brushless tools has come down. It's a steal, get it!

I bought these on Black Friday, my father has the XR 20v and these are definitely not as powerful and built as well but for small applications it really doesn't matter much as they are plenty powerful. I'm sure contractors here aren't considering these but they aren't meant for heavy use like that, for practical use they have been just fine for me

This is a pretty good deal but I like electrical better than atomic. While it's true you can't beat the capacity of those plutonium chambers, you have to be careful at end of life, most jurisdictions it's illegal to dispose of "atomic" waste in household trash (obviously it is allowed in Texas, but that's about it)
