If you're introducing your son to knives and knife safety, something traditional will be easier for him to use. I'd find something with a relatively short blade (3" or less),and something with a reliable locking mechanism. I think the locking mechanism choice is key, as improper use or failing to understand the limitations of some could land him very hurt.

I personally do NOT trust liner locks or frame locks. I feel the most secure locks are lockback or axis type locks, especially for a beginner, so here is one of each.

If you want to try an axis lock, I would consider something like a SOG Terminus. It's around $55, but I feel it's a great choice. It has SOG's version of the Axis lock (a Benchmade creation) without the high cost of entry to a Benchmade. It has a short (er) blade at 3" that is flat ground which is ground like this \ not like this (, which will make cutting tasks have a more consistent feel and be a bit easier to control than a hollow ground blade whose geometry changes. It also uses D2 steel which is superior to anything I saw in this sale (unless I missed something), and it's made by an American company as well, albeit in China.

If you want absolute lock mechanism security, I have to go with a lockback. I'd consider a Kabar Dozier. It does have a hollow ground blade, but is a decent steel, is lightweight, comes in a variety of colors so you could choose his favorite or one that would be easy to find if dropped while camping, is also made by an American company, and is very inexpensive if damaged or lost at around $23 or so.

There are many options. If you don't like these, report back and I'll toss a few more out. I was emphasizing lock mechanism safety with a utilitarian style blade that's relatively inexpensive while not junk. If you are open to a higher budget, there are many more options that open up that he'd be thrilled with.

I EDC the Leek, but I'm going to go against the crowd and say it's not a great scout knife. It has a very fine point that can snap off. A heavier multi tool or at least a thicker blade for stuff like whittling would probably be better for a scout. The Leek is perfect for lighter duty pocket carry, but for woodsy stuff I'd get something heavier.

I'd buy 3 if they did, but I feel like it's not made anymore sadly.

I was never a big fan of the Skyline. Out of the knives for sale, the Leek would likely be the one I would use. It is a bit small for me though.

Also, these prices do not seem great. And why is the clamshell Leek $13 more. I do not get it. Harder to send you a fake one?

Love the Ken onion lines. Glad I got some of these years ago for like $10 less on the leek and the scallion but you wouldn't get that price these days

Been using a leek for over 10 years. Just picked up a Scallion from this deal. Still made in USA.

Still decent deal, but the knives are nowhere near as good as they used to be since moving production to China =(

Edit: I see some of these at least are USA made. Makes them a much better deal.

Clam Shell packaging is just the retail plastic packaging that is hell to open, like you would see hanging from a store shelf

Too bad they only have the leek in camo. The leek is arguably one of the best EDC (every day carry) knifes on the market. Would have bought if I other colors were on offer.
