I almost purchased these Plano boxes last year but ended up with this:
https://www.target.com/p/sterilit...nk=sametab

Reasons: More than double the storage and a gasket to keep out dust/moisture. Purchased for $13 in store, I keep it bungee corded in the bed of my truck and use it to stow misc items.
The Plano will have thicker walls for more durability, but I'm not tossing this item around. It stays put. I hope this helps anyone!
I have two of these bolted to the top of my Jeep's roof rack for over a year, and they have surprisingly withstood weather and being banged up against tree branches off road (like seriously big tree branches) without damage yet. Pricing wise, I bought two more Jan 1 last year and paid $16.78 each, so not quite a slick deal. But I may order one as a spare, because sooner or later I'm going to break one!
That's a lot smaller than it appears, only 17 gallons.

To each his own but this is a very poor deal if you're looking for sturdy storage, per gallon. BJs is selling the black and yellow 27 gal totes for $13/ea. I am pretty sure Costco has a similar price but their website doesn't give accurate in store pricing.
The Costco black and yellow go on sale for $8.50 here and there (maybe a couple times a year or once a year?). Crazy they started out at $5.99 on sale 4-5 years ago and have steadily gone up in price since then. Next time around they will probably be $8.99.

I got a bunch and they taper which is annoying because it reduces the interior storage space and it is not as efficient if you have a bunch of the same-sized items (especially so if those items have square edges). Also, yes, they lids are really flimsy. I found this out trying to grab something out of the bin by not lifting the lid off completely. A little bit of bend and crack! Maybe that's a tradeoff for being durable with weight on top of them, I don't know.

Looks like they made a boo boo on the dimensions (two of them) 12" and 14" 🤣 the 30" depth makes sense

One problem with many of these storage boxes is that they have sunken lids with no water runoff channels, so if you keep them outside without cover, they'll pool water, which gets slimy and filthy in warmer weather and freezes over in colder weather, cracking the plastic. This unit looks like it might not have this problem given its design.

Lowes has them (27 gal) for more like $11, even cheaper than BJ's!

The reason for the tapering is to make them stackable when empty. If the sides were completely square to the bottom, it would be tough to take them apart. It also allows the bottom to nest in the top when stacking bins while full.

Napoleon was around 5'7" which was average for a Frenchman at that time. 🙄

Not buying the "regular price".

Looks like the same thing Cabela's has on sale for $19.99 (regularly $24.99).
https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/p...rage-trunk

So, still a couple bucks cheaper perhaps - but not something that's like $50 off.

Also note the size - in person, it was smaller than I had expected vs. the picture (in other words, don't be like me, pay attention to the dimensions)

Correction - Costco is ~ $11 (rounding) as is Lowes. BJ's is ~ $14. All 27 gal containers that are very similar. The Costco ones seem to nest a bit shorter than the BJ's tubs (different manuf).

Is there a recess for a gasket or is it just a couple of flat pieces of plastic?

In the past to weatherproof cartop carriers I've used weatherstripping to keep water out. You could probably also use silicone and mask the top half with plastic wrap

Just be careful on the thickness or else the container won't close.

Yes, there is a recessed area where the lid closes onto the container where there can be or should be a gasket or weather strip. Just looks like they didnt add it to cut cost but it is designed to have something.

lol i must be going crazy but i cant find the post someone made on what they used. I just checked the old thread as well. It was something they bought that was just enough for 2 lids.

Perhaps screen spline? Super cheap @ Home Depot, Lowes, etc. It's just a round, splined rubber cord typically with a hole running down the middle. Cut to length, adhere with some sort of adhesive and you're good to go.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Phife.../100391170

They sell it in different lengths obv. but also different diameters and colors.

I went to Home Depot to purchase the box. It was not as big as I expected. The box is very small but compact. I decided purchased it to leave in back of my trunk.
