I am not an expert in this area and still learning things. so please excuse me if my information is not entirely correct.
It is definitely possible to have a 5.1.2. You can go up to 5.2.2. However If you use all your 7 channels, (5 main speakers and 2 ceiling speakers in your case), it may have lot of load on your receiver as you are almost using all the channels. It will still get the job done. But if I were you, I would buy a Emotica Amplifier (two channel one) along with this receiver and connect either my Atmos speakers(In ceiling ones) or Front speakers to that Amplifier so that way I have a better quality of sound overall.
Returned this for the Onkyo. The power supply is significantly more robust on the Onkyo. Denon could not handle reference level on a 7 speaker set up (driven at 6ohms). The onkyo is robust enough to handle 4ohm loads as well where the Denon is not. Plus with built on chromecast it was worth the extra $50.
While I like Onkyo for their built-in Chromecast, I do prefer the HEOS on Denon which enables you to stream pretty much anything like Spotify,Tidal,Pandora, Tunein radio etc. and they
Currently I have a slimline Marantz NR1609 which is just a 50W slimline receiver but it is plenty loud for a small apartment even with the inefficient ELAC Unifi speakers under a 5.1 setup. It can only do 4K at 30FPS which is fine as only PS5 would utilize the 60FPS IMO.
FYI this 75W will give you pretty good loudness. If you go with a 100W receiver that would only get you another dB or two of perceived louder volume. Remember watt to loudness ratio is logarithmic. Now if you go with 90dB+ sensitive set of speakers, you will see much bigger difference in loudness.
AVR companies need to modernize the display LCDs btw. Every single one looks tiny or ugly, minus slimline Marantz and new Anthem models.

Could any of the home theater experts here give their opinion on this vs the Onkyo TX-NR6050?
Specifically, do they both max out at 40gbps,, and how do their room calibration systems compare?
Objectively speaking I didn't notice a back to back difference after setting up either receiver to my home theater. From a precise measurement standpoint I hear the audessey used by denon is more consistent, but to my ears everything sounded the same after calibration, except the onkyo was able to achieve what I consider reference level volume in my home theater where the denon was not able to reach reference volume for my speaker set up without noticeable distortion.

When did they add preamp outputs to this? I would have sworn this is a neutered unit, with only one hdmi output and zero preamp outputs (except for sub)
How much would this have cost under normal pre pandemic circumstances?
MSRP is likely around the same. The biggest difference between then and now was that you could find a lot of receivers on sale. Now the deal is that it's simply available. The s740h had a under 500 dollar MSRP but was sold for under 300 new and under 200 refurbished in a couple of instances.
Imo it's a slickdeal specifically from Costco, even if you don't already have a Costco membership. It's MSRP $600 on their own site, and even accessories4less has it at $500 refurbished. At $450 you can get a Costco membership for $60 and be even with a refurb unit for a brand new one.
... plus of course it's in stock.
I have this unit and it's great for the price for a simple setup.

I bought the onkyo 6050 and I am very happy with the set up process, specs. I didn't have to use the accuEcu provided with Onkyo receiver. Filmed my setup process: https://youtu.be/Ed8q_iCH4Go

No, the deal is that everyone else, including Denon, sells this for $600.
PS while it seems to become available online once a month, many stores have it in stock. When I decided a week ago that I will get this to replace my 13 year old Yamaha I walked into my local Costco and they had at least a dozen units sitting on a shelf.
I am no audiophile but for most people this one is MORE than enough. It integrates with both Google Home and Alexa, except that the GH integration is pathetic, like almost all GH integrations. All you can do is turn the receiver on and off. You can switch channels, set volume, play streaming media fairly flexibly with Alexa. I am running a mix of GH and Alexa in my house and am pretty close to sending all the GH units to ewaste.
Agree with whoever wrote that all the AVR makers need to modernize their LCD displays. Dot matrix in 2022? Really? And don't get me started with the appearance of the OSD. Hey <any AVR maker>, the 90s called and want their software back.

That's super misleading. Costco is really the only authorized online retailer who sells this model. Literally 99% of people who own this receiver got this from Costco. If you paid anymore than 450, you got ripped off.
Bought this over Christmas holiday and finally got it setup this past weekend (returned the Yamaha to Costco). While I don't discern a notable difference in sound quality between the Denon and Yamaha, the interface alone is 100x better than the Yamaha.

Is Costco an authorized dealer? I didn't see the on Denons website.

Wow it doesn't seem like they are authorized I just assumed they were since they sell so many Denon receivers and the fact they are Costco. I would assume you would still be covered if something were to happen their warranty is second to none.
