Don't expect to be able to keep this plugged in 24/7. On my server I never reboot, I've had it corrupt a drive twice forcing me to do a diskpart clean to get it back. Seems to be a common problem.

I've seen a handful of these RTL9210B enclosures around the sub 25 dollar range from SSK, Inateck, Fideco. I even saw another brand for less than 20 with an active coupon.
However, most of these enclosures I've noticed are the side out design.
I went with this enclosure over the other options due to this. Sabrent works better since the top lifts off and there is less potential of damaging the heat pad.

I have two of these and they've been very stable with several hours of active usage, but I haven't tested for 24/7 usage. I highly suggest updating the firmware right away to help fix any issues.

You can find the update firmware for the chipset here:

There are newer chipset firmware not from Sabrent, but I haven't tested those out yet. There is a thread on Anandtech forums about various chipsets version firmware and where to download them. It's a long thread, but it gives a lot of details about the RTL9210 chipset and the fixes the firmware versions have made.

Are these enclosures stable? Frequently I see random disconnects and such whenever I look at the reviews. Doesn't matter which controller chip is inside, there's random disconnections from the nvme drives, where direct connection to MB doesn't have the issue. Anyone experience the issues with these portable enclosures?

No it's more like a gooey pad, it doesn't stick to the drive.

I have this exact model with a 1TB western digital blue NVME drive, I used to just attach it when needed but now I keep it perma attached to my rear 3.2 type C port and haven't had it disconnect once, even when mounting images.

I did have issues with it disconnecting on my front panel USB 3.1 type A port, but that was a non related issue with my AMD motherboard.

It is a good enclosure. It gets hot with a few minutes of usage. Also, you cannot use Samsung Magician for cloning because of the Sabrent interface. They provided some Acronis WD software which didn't work for my 970 evo plus, so I used Macrium 8 for cloning. Fyi..

I use this enclosure to scan drives like the GS BB drives posted recently. I have also used it to clone replacement drives. It is convenient because it replaced two enclosures I was having to use before, and I was always getting them mixed up.

I have not used heat pad-I just put a small usb fan blowing on the drive and it averages 38-39 degrees doing a HD sentential surface scan and same on WD diagnostic scans. Clones do not even get up to that because they are usually pretty fast depending on usb port,

The only annoying thing about the enclosure is the rubber peg that secures the drive. If you work on computers small screwdrivers are always available and are much easier to use. It hasn't happened yet, but I am afraid the peg will eventually tear.

Mine came with thin heatsink already stuck to top of case. It has plastic covering which I have not removed because I change drives a lot.

This gets Hot within few minutes of usage . if you are planning to use as external i would stick with external drives or people also suggested you can add a heat sink to M.2 enclosure /thermal tape not sure.

It is now running through a port directly on the motherboard. I'm using an Asrock X570 Taichi motherboard with a 3900x

No. Decent 1TB nvme drives are like $90 - $110. Plus the enclosure. But your transfer speed would be something like 1.6gbps if I did napkin math right.

I have this enclosure. It's truly tool-free and plug and play. Any NVME m.2 2280 length drive should work. I'm currently using a Samsung PM961 512 GB in mine (OEM pull). This is a great price. If I needed it, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
