here is my timeline.
I activated a brand new iPhone XR from total wireless (from an old deal) on 12/25/2021 came with $25 worth of credit (1 month of service)

I used a scratch off of $25 for the second month.
On my account it shows: service end date: 2/22/2022
Technically, the 60th day would be the 21st of this month, so 7 more days to see if it auto unlocks.

I purchased 4 XR refurbs from total wireless
activated all 4 under a new account. Here is where I MIGHT have an issue since they might see this as 'fraud' since I did NOT purchase the 2nd month of service.

the dates activated are: 2x 12/28/2021 and 2x 1/4/2022
The soonest I will find out for the refurb xr's are on 2/25/22, about 11 days.

I also purchased a new iPhone 11. activated: 1/26/22.
I have not added a second month yet but I might since it's a brand new 11 and I need it to unlock it for my dad.

iPhone is auto-unlock. I suspect auto-unlock should mean that connection to wifi is sufficient.
Edit: wrong info

I am planning to wait a couple days after my first month expires to renew for the second month. That should get me to 62nd day after activation with active service, and receive the unlock signal even if Total is late by a day or two.

Any flaws with this plan? This is to avoid the possibility of needing to have a THIRD month of service just to receive the unlock signal.

The SIM needs to be in the phone at least and physically in USA (so you can't activate it and ship it out overseas before the 60 days).

So the question is does the SIM needs to have active service, or TF can/will emit the unlock signal without active service.
SIM gives the iPhone cell service. AFAIK, unlock is related to iPhone IMEI and happens on Apple server. So if active service is necessary, then I assume that SIM needs to be in phone. But if active service is not a TW requirement for unlocking (nobody knows yet), it makes sense to me that SIM in phone may not be required after initial activation since unlocking is on Apple server.

really depends on TW unlock policy if 60 days of continuous service is necessary. If your service lapse for 2 days, then it would not be 60 days of continuous service. At this point, I am not sure if anybody knows.

Anyone else here has still not activated their phone? I got 2 phones, one of them I activated immediately. Was thinking to activate the 2nd one around when the 2 months end for first device.

Is there any max duration by when the device should be activated? Thanks in advance!
I checked with cs and they said 90 days should be fine. I only need about 60 days like you as I have xfinity service that I need until then. I think the credit is on your account and as long as sim is valid it should be fine. The 90 days came from cs as a general guess for sim expiration which is usually a lot more than that. Having said that I am going to check my sim's expiry Smilie
I have not yet put it in the phone just using it on wifi...

I wouldn't do that I got the XR months ago and was waiting on the rewards points to clear thinking I could pay for coming months with that. I waited and the service lapsed before points could be used so service was interrupted for less than a day. I add a card to continue service then a couple days later points are available.

Fast forward to last month I wanted to know how much it would cost to unlock I think it should be $175 but they tell me $225. I was told that when service lapsed the 12 month clock restarted to unlock so screw Tracfone with their crap.

Have your iPhone XR been unlocked automatically?

This is what I'm going by:

But indeed, I missed the fact that that post did not say "iPhone".

Yeah, I've seen a few posts mention that's the way it works on Verizon. Hopefully it's implemented the same way for TW.

The Verizon policy even mentions that it will still unlock if you suspend service …

https://www.verizon.com/support/d...king-faqs/

"If I suspend my service, does the date my device will be unlocked change?

No, suspending your device does not change when your device will be eligible to be unlocked.
Note: Suspending your device because it was lost or stolen will prevent it from being unlocked."

Probably won't get a definite answer for another two weeks, most phones weren't activated till late in Dec.

I am in the same boat as you and personally, I would not try it. I figure if I'm playing it safe by getting a second month, to be safe, I might as well start my second month immediately after my first month ends.

Speaking of which though, if I buy a refill card before my first month expires, can I redeem it immediately and expect it to only go into effect after my first month ends? Or do I have to wait until they day after my first month ends before redeeming it?
