Someone posted the following comment in 'Black Friday iPhone deal thread'. Their Verizon iPhone Auto Unlocked on the 60th day.

"The most magical thing just happened guys. Today I woke up to a "No SIM Restriction" on a Verizon iPhone 13. So they do definitely unlock it automatically on the 60th day. I still have the Verizon line but it's in a "voluntary suspended )$10 a month)" status because I wanted to make sure it would unlock and I still had a line (I don't think keeping a line is necessary btw, I was just being extra cautious). All good. Everything turned out ok to my surprise!"

That's Tracfone proper, you can choose. Total Wireless has always been Verizon only and Simple Mobile is T-Mobile. The parent company of Tracfone (which VW bought) has these:

SIM options
Tracfone: ATT, T-Mo, Verizon
Total Wireless: Verizon
Simple Mobile: T-Mobile
Net10: ATT(now removed), T-Mo, Verizon
Pageplus: Verizon
Walmart Family Mobile: T-Mo
Straight Talk: ATT, T-Mo, Verizon

I've been doing this a while and know the ins and outs of TFW. Verizon may or may not force all brands to their network at some point. They also may consolidate the brands, but that's the rundown.

Happy to report that my refurb XR is unlocked. After seeing your message, I checked Carrier Lock and it indeed said No SIM restrictions. Activated my service on 12/23. Did not pay for 2nd month of service. Hooray!

That is a Bummer. I thought the old way still works and there will be people selling codes for unlock. So with the new trend for all phones and carriers, there is the only way activate, pay for whatever is the minimum number of months you need to keep the phone active and then request for unlock?

that's not "new" trend. that's how it's supposed to work.

iPhone never used "unlock code". that's like Android thing.

there are also all sorts of "iphone unlock service" on ebay and try those at your own risk. my view is if they actually work then no one would ever need rsim, just something fishy about those.

Doesn't look like you need to keep it active for a minimum number of months (for Verizon-related companies at least). You just need to activate it on their system and it will unlock 60 days later, regardless if you let the service lapse.

That's good to know and good to have for Verizon and subsidiaries. I was just thinking about in general if that's the only way because some carriers may need 12 months of service. It's best to get phone unlocked if that's the case even if the upfront price is $50 or so high

Not sure if you've followed these threads enough to see other posts referencing them, but there are also RSIM and NYturbo / white unlock cards that can essentially do a software unlock of a phone. Some piggyback on the SIM card, but others just need to be inserted once and the phone will stay unlocked indefinitely unless you factory reset it. They don't work for every situation, but many have reported success using them with these TW phones.

No... Not followed these threads much after the initial couple of days of lots of activity.

Never used iPhone before so I'm not too sure of the other options you have mentioned. I'll Google it up now

You may also want to glance at the posts below. The numbers entered can change periodically, but the method seems to have been pretty reliable for quite a while now. Also, I have seen some say that you sometimes need to update the iOS version to get things going. There have also been other related discussions that you could probably find if you search the main few threads here for keywords like nyturbo, rsim, or white sim.

Tried to trade my extra XR into gamestop today and they said they couldn't recognize it. Literally took it straight from the box and into the shop not activated. I said it was a verizon phone. Does gamestop want activation and know it's total wireless?

The first of my December batch of refurb XRs shows unlocked via sickw.com today, so it looks like they are going to auto-unlock. I traded all the XR in, but have 3 of the new TW 11s for family. Only data point to verify next is whether RSIM usage affects it, but when I text 611611 from an RSIM unlocked phone it shows the correct upcoming unlock date. Glad I got a few 11s when the 25% coupon was around. Great deal.
