So even with auto brightness disabled and max brightness on both, one is still noticeably dimmer?

Yeah, a trade in would probably be the simplest way. From what I've seen on other threads, they just want to see that it works and no obvious defects. There are tools that look for aftermarket screens, but the previous person who posted about having an aftermarket screen said that it didn't show up as one until Apple warranty guys did their thing and flagged it.

I'm still not certain that I'd assume the dimmer one is the aftermarket … there seems to be a lot of confusion about it. Would be great if we had a definitive way to tell.
Well the dimmer one has the yellow tinge and feeling the edges, does not feel as smooth as the brighter one.

Also with true tone on, there's definitely a yellow tinge on the dimmer display.
This link mentions that True Tone can actually cause a yellow tint to an Apple screen, so it could actually be an indication that one is being adjusted by the True tint algorithm while the aftermarket one is not (again, just playing devil's advocate here.)

OK, yeah the more evidence starts piling up, hopefully a clear winner will emerge. Rougher edge probably more likely to be from replacement

Actually, I just noticed that Thchan said that he had two different screens and the yellower one looked perfect, whIle the less yellow one showed slight scratches (as a used / original one would), so that seems like another indication that the more yellow one would more likely be the replaced screen.

One more experiment to try … pull up a screen of all-black (maybe open a pic of a pure black background) and turn the brightness of the screen all the way up (I'd turn auto brightness and True Tone off for both to avoid possible differences). See if one appears to be a more true black (or brighter edges, unevenness, etc.) I've heard that can sometimes be a clue on aftermarket screens.

Didn't notice a difference here but I've read that the all black matters for OLED screens and the XR isn't an OLED.

Gotcha. Yeah I was thinking some form of irregularities might stand out more even for non-OLED, but oh well.

Quick question, does the refurb phone comes with a standalone prepaid card or does it come with SIM that's already pre-filled with the whatever $ plan you purchased?

I'm already a TW user on $60 plan and I'm planning to pop my SIM card into the refurb XR, but, I'm wondering how it works.

Thanks for sharing the video, Milo_B. Did you get TW prepaid card for the $25 plan you purchased? Did you receive any SIM card at all? Thanks.

Does anyone know how soon you have to activate the sim? Can I wait 30 days?

No problem for 30 days.

I think I activated mine couple months after delivery for my iPhone SE ($99 + $25 Plan) order last round.

TW phones will activate on TF but you lose the plan. Activate (on TF) as a Tracfone using original sim in phone (sim is linked to phone IMEI), choose keep current number & number/plan will switch to new phone. (Do not just swap old sim, phone won't be registered to network correctly & will not unlock).
Could you activate the TW iPhone normally, like you bought it to use with TW, and then after it's all set upand working just remove the TW SIM and put in a current user's TracFone SIM from a different phone and just go from there?

I said not to just move a sim. VZ has always required phones to be linked to IMEI so you need to activate the XR on TF even after unlock so it gets registered.
TF has started notifying users when sim is in wrong phone & it can affect your service if not done correctly.

I saw that you said not to move the SIM but thought you meant not to move it from the TF to the TW phone right off the bat. I didn't realize you still couldn't do it after activating the phone with the SIM it came with. Thanks for the clarification.

Target currently has the SE on Total Wireless for $250 with a $150 gift card if you activate in store (making the phone essentially $100), but the Tracfone version is $289 with a $140 gift card, making the TF version $150. I thought you could save the additional $50 difference if you were on Tracfone by buying the TW version but that doesn't seem to be the case.
