first thing I do is join a metal detecting Club
second thing I would do it possibly buy used metal detector from a member of the metal detecting club ( but don't be in a hurry look around see what other members are using )
you don't want to end up buying someone's boat anchor
try to buy the mid-range that most of the metal detecting club members use.
At the club I used delong to whites metal detectors was first choice ( no longer made you all have to buy used )
if you're looking for new $500 + plus for a decent one ( don't buy some hundred dollar toy )
Whites Metal Detectors
Garrett Metal Detectors
Minelab Metal Detectors
Fisher Metal Detectors
just word of advice most people get into this hobby will not stay in it .
