A good quality thermal paste like this will typically last 3-5yrs in the tube. You can tell it's starting to spoil when first comes out "runnier" and less like a thick glue.

Once installed, which is what I think you are inferring, it should be good for about 5-7years.

The variable is primarily operating condition. If overclocked CPU, running in a hot attic or room with poor ventilation, Florida, whatever, that may knock a year or two off. Take care of your system with average to good cooling, ~72dg avg room temp, it wouldn't be unusual to get 10yrs.

You can typically know it's time when starting to get thermal shutdowns of the CPU, as a protection mechanism.

I hope this helps.

I saw a youtube video of a guy testing thermal paste using a high quality AIO. The video was testing the different methods of spreading it. He tried a big dot in the middle, dots on 4 edges, criss cross, spreading it as one coat across, etc. In the end, the methods maybe resulted in a 1-2 degree difference. When done, he tested no paste at all. It was maybe 3-4 degrees hotter than when using paste, which I found suprising. Probably depends on the quality of the contact surfaces though.

That sounds about right when you consider the primary intent of this stuff in the first place - to fill in the microscopic imperfections that otherwise trap air particles between the CPU and the heatsink. The more sophisticated, shrinking modern CPUs increasingly can benefit from preventing such hotspots.

I'd suggest if they saw much more, either the heatsink or CPU may be severely warped whichnwould be well, kind of weird. Smilie

While that make sense, I didn't do it for my 4770k that I had for 6 years. I only applied it once with arctic silver 5 on the initial install. Ran fine during all that time. I do wonder though with 12th gen i7 and i9 if it is prudent to reapply more frequently.

I hear good things with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and that was what I used for my new build. I wonder which is better or if they are all in the same ballpark performance wise.

There is an independent testing graph out there somewhere on Google that, if I recall well, shows similar performance between the TG Kryonaut and this MX-4 (I think this actually performed marginally better).

When you start getting into this quality level, it starts to get close enough that for most of us, the practical impact isn't really perceivable to anyone other than the most dedicated enthusiast. If that were the case, I wouldn't be looking at TG's aluminum silicone mix but rather find a heavier silver or copper mix as either metal is several steps ahead on basic thermal conductivity.

Bought some MX-5 from Amazon a few months ago and it was too dry to apply. Might have just been unlucky, but pretty annoying when you're mid build. Luckily I had some 2 year old MX-4 that still looked okay, but might be a good idea to use a small test amount ahead of time when you get this in the mail.

Does thermal paste really go bad in the tube? I've had 2 tubes of this stuff (1 unopened) for like 8 years and it's been fine, comes out with good consistency still and notice no issues. It's hard to use up this stuff.
