If you have carpet stick with the s9 - it does not have as much suction. This is nothing more than an i7 with the obstacle avoidance feature for wires & poop.
It does not work in the dark although it has a light in the front. The light is used strictly for obstacle avoidance only.

Any Lidar (laser based) navigation vacuum is going to be far superior than the Roombas.

My review on the J7+ after coming from the i3 (non-plus). I got the J7+ from Amazon for $515 after taxes due to an insane deal that they had for a very short period of time.

Short version: If you have some low carpets and your home is 1100+ sq ft big, you'll appreciate the purchase.

Pros:
1) It's quiet sometimes. Sometimes the J7 isn't vacuuming and just moving to a destination, and during these moments it's a lot quieter than the I3.
2) It vacuums my home in half the time. The i3 needed an extra 20min to vacuum, but this extra 20min meant it needed to charge before vacuuming again. The charging would double the vacuum time as a result.
3) Self-emptying is a godsend. While vacuuming, it always needed to be emptied, which meant I had to go to it every time so that it could finish.
4) The avoidance system works perfectly for my home. There were some things that would always result in the Roomba getting stuck on, and this newer one handles it perfectly.

Here are my initial impressions after upgrading from an i7 (without suction dock).

It is noticeably quieter than the i7, which makes it easier to run while I'm working from home.
It seems to have a little less suctions on the rugs than the i7.
Cord and dog toy avoidance is a MAJOR plus versus the i7.
The Clean Base upgrade will be noticeable once we have to go back into the office. I had to empty the plain i7 a couple of times in order for it to clean the entire house.

Overall, I'm happy with the decision to upgrade from the i7 to the j7+

I am buying the J7 alone without the vacuum dock. It's huge and very loud. Returning my open box J7+
Agree that the dock is huge and it makes a lot of noise for about 4 seconds when it empties. You need to make sure you have a good place for it before buying
I do not mind the vacuum noise since it's set up for 9 am when the house is empty. Constantly emptying the canister is not that painful but I would always forget to do it with my old rumbas resulting in poor cleaning.
I have one and bought two more today for the rest of the house.

Mine works fine in the dark. Also, demonstrated here https://youtu.be/ytQyj1AzTfY.

My J7+ is OK but the dock is loud, it still uses its bump sensor a lot, and the obstacle avoidance supposedly should improve with updates but it is far from perfect now. It's unable to get some pet hair out of our area rug. The future seems to be lidar with obstacle avoidance so you have to manage your expectations since this only has obstacle avoidance.
Try running it in complete darkness from the start and ask it to go to a specific room which is not in the room it is in. You will realize it will not go to the specific room but will vacuum the room it is in.

Still happy with it overall? Contemplating vs the Costco i8+
The i8+ is the same as the i7+ except it has a bigger battery.

Which is the regular price everywhere & nothing slick about it. Seems like a manufacturer discount from the MSRP. If you had bought it in Dec you would have got it with an additional $100 credit from Amex if you used your Amex card. So it would have been even cheaper.

What do you mean by complete darkness? Like night-time darkness out in the boonies?

I have no clue how the customer service of iRobot is but it can't be worse than Roborock. I have read a lot of reviews (with personal experience) of their vacuums going bad after around 6 months of use and then having to deal with their terrible CS which will try whatever possible to avoid doing an RMA. In my case, they straight up refused the RMA claiming that based on the "manufacturing date" my robot was out of warranty even after sending them the Amazon order# and invoice showing less than a 1-year purchase date. They then had the audacity to send me the link to buy a new LIDAR unit from AliExpress and replace it myself.

There are other things to consider. Pet hair being one that's way more important than navigation style to me.

Still haven't opened the Costco i8+ purchased in December. Is this a better model? The price is very similar to what I paid at Costco

Most definitely. iRobot has discontinued that older model. J7 is more recent.

I have two of these, one for upstairs one for down. They're pretty solid. I feel like they get 95% of what is on the floor and consistently. Mine works in the dark fine, after it mapped. Obstacle avoidance is great, have not had to move it or anything, as it moves around it.
