This is what you need Autel ABS SRS OBD2 Scanner, Autel Scanner Maxilink ML619, Upgraded Version of AL619, Check Engine Code Reader with 10 OBD2 Test Modes https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072XH9...7WMT5
Depending on what car u have, you can get as well a foxwell nt510 elite. which is a bidirectional scan tool. This one comes with a preload software (depends on ur car's manufacturer)

Birectional means clears and reprograms or something else?
Honda
Are these handheld better than similar that are more expensive touch screen that run on android 7.x?
A literal clone, with the same functions on the free apps on the android phonees.

Good question, bidirectional means that you can talk to the ECU. For example with the Odyssey, usually after cleaning a really dirty throttle body, you need to do an idle relearn. With the Foxwell you can do that. As well u can test solenoid, switches, regulators and anything else control by the ECU. One of the thing u can't do with these is TPMS registration. You can add up to 5 brands to it. Each I believe goes from $60-$80. https://www.foxwelltool
These low budget obd2 scan tool, only can read the codes from the ECU, but can't talk back to it. The mode expensive sometimes can do TPMS, and the screen are easier to read/navigate. Some as well will show u the code, along with a brief description of what could be the issue. In my opinion the NT510 cover everything you might need to do in ur vehicle.

This is fine for basic code scanning but dated. If you plan to use ForScan or do anything more advanced you may want a better newer scanner. There brand name readers are much newer faster chips, that also support newer protocols too. They will set you back a lot more money $50 to $120+. They also get things like firmware updates that the the cheaper devices simply do not offer.

What about NT809? Only 18 months free update, not a lifetime like some other units. Still old android 9 but better than some others i see 7-7.1 Is it worth paying extra or overkill for me? I have transmission shudder don't know if any scanner is capable of detecting bad torque converter.
They hand me ~$800 quote for a new module + the reprogramming.
I used this exact scanner along with FORScan, but that generation of Mazda cars had not been programmed to reflash the brake module yet. They would send me test files to flash and it would not work, I started losing hope. Eventually it worked (after 3 or 4 different test files).
$20 (along with alittle DIY)>>>>$800

It actually uses an ELM clone. I tested mine a while back and the app reported it as a clone. That said though, I've had this thing for years and it's my go to for reliable scanning.
I've had some of the cheaper ones too and a few of those didn't work right out of the box. Or seemed like it was working only to crap out a half way through scanning.
If you need an inexpensive, reliable scanner to throw in your glove box and forget until you need it, this is the one.
And it can scan BCMs, the app or program you are using has to support it though. Most apps just want you to buy their fancy over priced dongle instead. I know this because Carista works with ELM scanners and reads pretty much every module in my VW.

Which Honda do u have?, share a bit more of model, year and problem that u are having and I might guide u in the right direction...some models with VCM will make the transmission to shudder when VCM get triggered, a VCM Muzzler will disable VCM therefore the shudder should disappear. The NT510 should be enough if the tranny is throwing u any code.
