I am sorry that the district was so quick to label your son. I come to my job with a lot of personal experience, so I always make sure the child understands his or her disability is is happy with the services he or she is receiving. Obviously, you cant please everyone, but I do believe the child should have input in his or her education. I'm dyslexic and I had ADHD as a child. I remember faking reading until they finally figured it out when I was in the 3rd grade. I was so good at memorizing what words looked like that I was able to fool people. When I got to 5th grade I had a b*tch of a teacher who told me that I would never amount to anything. There was a boy in my class who was "slow" and she said he and I were two peas in a pod. I hated going to school and played sick.. a lot... Finally, my parents were fed up and got me evaluated privately. I cannot tell you what a difference that made in my life. The doctor, a psychologist, explained to me that I wasn't stupid. She went over the results with me and honestly, it was like a huge weight being lifted off of me. I continued seeing her for many years and she inspired me to be a psychologist. I am a major believer in self-fulfilling prophecies. I struggled all the way through high school, but when I got to college, and was doing the work *for myself* and not for everyone else, I was successful. I went to graduate school and graduated with as 3.9 and I'm going back for a doctorate in psychology in 2010. Having this history, I find that I am much more sensitive to the children who I work with. To this day I rely heavily on spell check Big Grin

Yep, I breastfeed ds until he was 21 months. The only part I didn't like was the walk up snack bar. Hop on lap and pull up blouse, he never thought about who was in the room at this moments.

Here is a link to an old video of Ryland singing a country song he loves. (Alan Jackson~ Country Boy) If you know the words, you can understand him. He can talk so much better now. It takes a second to get to his favorite part.
I think I made my albums private besides this video. Let me know if it isnt private.
Too cute! He really is very adorable! hug Sending best wishes your way!!

I find it interesting to read about the little ones. Yea, some school districts are soooo...much better than others.
Both my kiddos are HOH, and both their IEP's were so different through their school years.

hug The school district here has been great for my DD. I couldn't believe the services they've offered and she's been receiving services since she was 4 months old. I'd always thought it was only when she was "school age" that the district would do anything. I haven't waded into the realm of IEP's, but will soon. Not looking forward to that.

Did the military school have any issues with your son's hearing loss? Or the military? Usually they will deny people due to that. Just curious.

Congrats on your son graduating and doing so well!! It's a great feeling to know he was successful and 'beat' those others' expectations of him. Thanks for sharing.

The military school had no issues with his hearing loss, just no IEP to follow since it was a private school. They did not have to follow those IEP's. but the class sizes for the boys ranged from 4 to 12 students usually. Yes, my kid had one of those 4 student classes! Only trouble we had was those teachers that loved talking to the blackboard. Simply asked for a copy of their notes and he was his way.

The actual military. Yes, he did not pass his physical the first time around due to his hearing loss. I believe they, the army classified it as a level 3 loss for him. The MOS, the job he selected could only be a level 2 loss or a 1. Either way it took another physical and doctor recommendations that he COULD do this job with his type of hearing loss. So after wards his physical got reviewed and they passed him into the military.

I do agree with you. I thought that special ed services began at school age. I also learned I was wrong after dd. I was able to get her into a speech class at age 3 and then I find out, that school actually recommended for her to go to a special education class at age 4. So at 4 she was going to school! While she was at school, I found out that I could get testing for the baby to come...The above son. So when we found out he was hearing impaired too. We had the school district and the Elks club services come to the house. Both services for him started before he was a year old.

That's great! I'm glad it worked out for your son!!

My DD will be going into an HOH/Deaf classroom for preschool once she turns 3. The instructor in the classroom actually signs to the kids which is great. DD has decreased her signing due to wanting to just talk and I am hoping that she'll maintain her signing when she gets a little older!

Egads - that is exactly what we've had with our 23 m.o. I've been thinking "when will this be over"?? I cut out the evening nursing and went to 2 x a day. Yesterday, she didn't ask to nurse once, and so far today - nothing. Now I'm Crying and wondering what happened to my baby...

When my DD went to the CHOH class for preschool she also learn how to sign. Remember we didn't know for sure until was 3 and a half that she had a hearing impairment. She was mainstreamed into kindergarten; no sign language. Reunited with her original speech teacher and all was good. She stayed at this school with IEP and whatever special services she needed until grade 4. We moved to Wisconsin. Grade 5 through 7 she had a sign language interpreter even for her band class! By grade 7 this school district didn't want to fund an interpreter for a gifted student, said it was ok if she got only a C average with no services.
Grade 8 moved to a different school district, the same one that failed my son. But anyways...only note takers for those years.
She went off to college had 4 years of a sign language interpreter. She rotated between two different people at her school. She gets married and who also attended her wedding? Her interpreter. Smilie She even signed to the DD so she knew when to throw her bouquet. How great is that!
Now DD was one of the lucky ones...1200 applicants to get into grad school. 90 students are enrolled. She has been told no interpreter. Frown She is looking at other options like real time captioning. Her classes start next week.
