For any motorcyclists looking for extra protection, Dainese is having a rare 20% sale on its untethered air bag vest.

The Smart jacket is 20% off again, last year this sale lasted only 3 days.

It is still a good chunk of change but it is basically the price of a nice helmet but for protection for your upper body.

Good jacket! and the price is good. Just be aware that once it is triggered, the airbag needs to be replaced (about 250 or so), unlike the other ones (like helite turtle for example) that just require a cartridge to be replaced
If it goes off, you gotta send it back to Dainese and pay $250 to refill it.

If you must go electronic, I'd go with the Helite E-Turtle. $30 refill and you do it yourself. And it comes with a full size CE level 2 back protector.

But I'll be sticking with my tether.
I have one of these Dainese air bag vests and will never ride without it. It's a fantastic design and I have seen examples where it has saved riders from much worse injury. Yes, wear a good helmet and armored gear, but this safety vest will give you far more protection for those unexpected accidents that could cause significant damage around your torso and back.

yes, no brainer at this new low price. however, this is version 1 and apparently there is a version 2 on the market. since these just came out a few years ago, can't be an enormous difference but what exactly i dunno. from the pics, the outward appearance is the same. my guess is they have improved sensors, deployment, coverage, etc. version 2 prices are still msrp.

you might be hanging out with the wrong crowd. riding can be dangerous but it's not THAT bad. not even close. i can think of a "couple dozen" other activities we should focus on that are truly dangerous and involve way more accidents and fatalities. the vast majority of us are safe and responsible. protective gear goes a long long way.

yeah i know, there's always the "you don't HAVE to ride a motorcycle" saying.
I think a lot depends on where you live. I'm in a crowded suburb not far from NYC. Bumper to bumper work traffic and lots of foreign people driving without licenses. Two people got hit and killed walking on the sidewalks. We do have a huge amount of deer that jump out of the woods unexpected. The more rural roads are lined with poles and boulders. One local lost control and hit a phone pole support cable and became two pieces. If I lived in a flatter, more open space I might get a motorcycle. Its just too crazy where I am. I knew a UK guy who rode pro in England. Some grocery shopper pulled-out in front of him when he was going too fast. He dropped and slid his bike like he was taught but he hit his head on the car anyway and is gone. People shouldn't speed but its so easy to do on a motorcycle. Add in sloppy traffic and its rough situation

Too bad they only have XS and S in stock.
Edit: My bad. The drop down size menu didn't work the first time.

I'm truly sorry about your friend, but nobody teaches to "drop and slide your bike". Plastic or metal on concrete does not have a higher coefficient of friction than rubber. There is no such thing as "hadda layyerdown".

LOL..lots of comments from non riders here. If you people are so afraid of life, best you don't ride. Betting fully vaxed, and wearing your mask in a car too. No generation is more fearful than a millennial.
More like people don't wanna pay medical bills that result from your dumb decisions

Do not buy this. Refill is super expensive . Alternatives exist that use standard co2 cartridges

Yes actually they do when you're a track racer (he was). Sliding is a main technique on the track and its known to be useful on the street. If you can't avoid crashing into a car there's no law you have to,hit head first. Dude tried to go in low and sideways. You see some people even slide under trucks and come out ok

"Mastering the Art of the Motorcycle Slide"

"To get through each corner, motorcycle racers must slow down, turn, and accelerate. Sliding, with both wheels still spinning, makes it possible to slow down and turn at the same time, allowing the rider to aim the bike down the next straightaway and accelerate out of the corner. And these skills aren't just for racers. Muscle memory for dealing with an incipient slide can help regular street riders avoid a crash."

I've been riding 20 years. One of my friends is now a paraplegic.. This jacket probably aids your probability in not becoming paralyzed or dead in an accident.
If you use this device and have insurance there is a good chance the insurance company will reimburse you for the vest. If someone else is at fault, then you're definitely entitled to reimbursement.
The other thing is, you may regret later not buying such a vest. SO here you have a couple of more motivations to buy one. To the guy who said helmets no matter the price won't save you, that's
not true. In some circumstances a helmet will save your life. I prefer ot wear a helmet for general riding comfort anyway.
Yeah and my friends are dead. And all were wearing helmets

So how is this going to prevent spine compression or movement? It's just for rib fractures. Which are common. But no biggie and heal in 6 weeks

Quote from wrswldo :
I'm relation to that a good thing about airbag vests is that they puff up around the neck, limiting the amount of movement and helping to prevent neck injury as well. I don't know if this particular vest does that well as they all are a little different.
Ok good to know. That should be the primary area of focus. They have autopsies of two wheeled deaths they should be using that as their guide if their goal is to save lives and do good
