The 5 kit size was pre-announcement. Remember it takes time to trickle down from a logistics perspective.

I'm sure in the coming months there will be 8 packs sold to help folks maximize their private insurance reimbursement. When that happens, expect a price increase of US sold kits to $12 per test which is the max of what most insurance companies will reimburse per kit.

For reference this was only $5 per kit before mid-Jan 2022. Be very skeptical of those who say the $5 per kit cost was due to a negotiation with the Biden administration to cap price at cost.

Here's a fact- while our US rapid tests pricing have more than doubled from $5 to $10 and soon to be $12 each, Europe and Asian countries still continue to pay less than $5 a kit.

For example the Abbott Panbio which is distributed in both Europe and Asia (but not US) costs SGD $4.75/ USD $4 each right now https://www.fairprice.com.sg/prod...k-13201080

Even this Target/ Costco Flowflex is still selling for SGD $4.90/ USD $3.60 each https://www.fairprice.com.sg/prod...k-13210515

The reality is that this is a great time to maximize profits if you are selling anything COVID related in the US market.

Price increase is simple supply and demand. Actually in the US case this is just purely a demand side issue (no issues with supply as there are tons of rapid kits being produced and sold around the world that's why there are no crazy prices in Europe and Asia)

Costco and other retailers should be selling these in multiples of 8 (or at least in even quantities) for monthly insurance reimbursment purposes

I work in the ED and frequently call patients back who are positive.
Don't hang your hat on these rapid antigen tests. approximate 20% return false negative.
Its better than nothing but I often see rapid tests come back negative and the standard pcr tests return positive.

Last, Omicron unfortunately does not care if you are vaccinated or not. Be safe!
The problem is that people.do not swap deep enough. If you went to the hospital and had a test done before then you know how deep to go. They work I have been giving them to family and friends when ill. Unfortunately the have all worked and they all tested positive. My brother the first time he did it he did not go up far enough. I watched him do it on video phone and it came negative I had him do it a second time and go much deeper came back positive and then he did another brand also deep came back positive. So the main problem I see is that consumers are not going deep enough.

My Target received some Access Bio antigen tests and they expire in march. The Flowflex ones I bought last week expire in October.

Reimbursement via insurance states kits need to be FDA APPROVED, these are only authorized, so YMMV.

Get vaccinated and stop testing. This whole thing is stupid.

The other problem with the use of rapid tests is that people are testing too early.
For symptomatic infection testing, these tests are reliable starting about the 2nd or 3rd day after symptoms start.
For asymptomatic infection testing, these tests are reliable starting about the 5th day after the supposed exposure incident.
Testing any sooner can likely result in a false negative and you will have wasted a test.
Also, with the omicron variant specifically, it's been researched that swabbing back in the throat first—and then the nose—would result in a more accurate test.

These are *approved* for emergency use. They are on the FDA list of approved tests that all the insurance companies are referring to.

Because you only get 4 kits and just once.
If you have private insurance, you can get reimbursed for 8 kits per person per month. Not that you would need that much but it's still free for many.
If you can't get reimbursed, then these would be the cheapest test you can get if you end up needing more than the 4 kits that were handed out.

It's funny how the government can force insurance companies to pay for these yet the government's own insurance, Medicare, won't cover it.
