For RAID use, SMR is extremely risky. According to one test I saw it can take 15x as long for the RAID to rebuild after a failed drive. That leaves you with a lot of exposure for a second failed drive and data loss. Any multi-drive NAS is going to want to use RAID, so these are just unsuitable for that.

I would only use SMR for single drive NAS. During extended large copy, SMR drive can slow down to about half speed, but that may not be a lot slower than a low end NAS can write over the network anyway.

They now offer both CMR and SMR drives in everything but Black drives. But who is to say they wouldn't in the future? So you really have to read the spec sheets before buying anything from WD.
