Okay, let me help you. I use it to walk and run, outdoors, with AirPods in. I can talk like anyone else using AirPods. I can listen to podcasts like everyone else with a phone. My phone though is an iPhone 13 max, so it's a pain in the ass to bring jogging.

There, now you know why it's useful.

It works, but don't try to hold a conversation on the watch, beyond basic questions. Forget about it in a noisy enviroment. Texting works okay for quick replies or text to speech options. I have an older version 3.

I have a series 6 and have conversations on it all the time even though it's tied to my phone. It works great except if there's a noisy environment and you are trying to listen to someone it constantly cuts out because the microphone is picking up the noise (thinking you are speaking) so you have to use mute on the watch to hear the other person. Only in noisy environments or if it's really windy out.

I got one over the weekend - been out a few times walking for maybe 45 minutes at a time without my phone and streamed Apple Music to my AirPods while walking, got a few texts... worked great for me on Verizon.

I have left my iPhone at home and used my cellular Apple Watch Series 4 outside many times. I've used Apple Pay, Messages and received calls on my Apple Watch without any issues. For the best experience use AirPod Pros for phone calls.

I just upgraded to the cellular Series 6 for the better microphone and speakers. Walmart has them on sale for $379 ($100 saving over the Series 7).

I can't imagine spending hours relying on texting and phone calls through my watch. Unless you have a job where you're not allowed to have your phone on you (in which case you shouldn't be texting and talking on this anyways), I see no reason in the world to leave your phone at home and rely on this. That would be super annoying to see someone having their conversation on their watch, in public. It's bad enough when people speak loudly while on the phone, or have the speaker on, in public. Don't be that person. No one likes that person.
