they die after about a year even when you dont use it.
I can't vouch for the alt-F4 trick, but the super glue advice is sound. There's a rule of thumb that says chemical reaction rates halve for every 10 °C of cooling. If you go from room temperature of 22 °C to -20 °C in a domestic freezer, the glue should last 16 times longer. Again, that's just a rule of thumb. Depending on the particular reaction it could be significantly different.
According to WEICON[archive.org], a manufacturer of cyanoacrylate adhesive (aka super glue), the shelf life is unlimited when stored at -20 °C. Wikipedia cites this information in its cyanoacrylate article[wikipedia.org].
From Wikipedia:
For added insurance, I vacuum pack mine along with a bag of silica gel desiccant before storing it in the freezer. I also allow it to warm up to room temperature before breaking the seal on the vacuum bag to prevent any condensation.

Take the crappy batteries out so they don't leak. I have tons of these everywhere from when they were free. They are super handy and come in great during power outages. Magnets on back are a little weak but that only really matters if using them for vehicle maintenance or similar. Even at a dollar I'd pick em up if I didn't have so many.

Take the batteries out until you want to use it. You didn't really need to when they were free. But now it makes sense.
