Here, I will do your homework for you, but you owe me a coffee.

specifically went to costco to check this out. only cons IMO are following: the screen wobble is intense so if you like using laptops in your lap, expect a fair amount of screen movement when typing. the touchpad is really small and feels too plasticky. this model is known for a less than stellar touchpad and that was evident in the little time i spent with it. The fan vents are pointing towards the screen which is a weird design decision. but on a good note, screen is nice, 16:10. end to end keyboard is really nice! and it's really lightweight. I/O at this price is solid too. all in all, the price is fantastic for what you get but i couldn't bite cause of the weak trackpad and screen wobble

Got one in store. Was going to go with the HP i3 on sale for $380, but figured this was a better deal with double the RAM, SSD, bigger battery and a better CPU. First thing I did was wipe the SSD and ditch the pre-loaded Windows 11 install. Setting up a dual boot with Arch Linux and a fresh install of Windows 11 Home downloaded from Microsoft was a straight forward and painless process. The Windows 11 installer set up all the hardware and the install was activated out of the box. To my surprise, the mainstream Linux kernel recognized all the hardware, despite being a current generation laptop. Gnome runs like a dream and everything works including WiFi, bluetooth, touchpad, screen brightness with the current Linux firmware out of the box. The only firmware I needed to install were for the sound card and fingerprint reader. Linux has definitely come a long way as a consumer OS. Very happy with the choice I made. It will serve me well for a good while.

Can you pls link article for dual boot? I would like to dual boot this laptop.

I am using this laptop for a week. The lid and palmrest are aluminum, bottom cover is plastic. SmartByte app needs to be uninstalled to prevent wifi issues. Also trackpad was bugging me until I disabled three and four finger gestures in advanced settings, since then it is rock solid. Speedy and light machine, great for browsing and office stuff, not a gamer here. I was able to get 7+ hours of battery browsing web.

Do we need to create userid for MS to use/signin or we can have standalone local copy?

The laptop comes with Windows 11 Home To first setup the laptop it requires an internet connection and to use an MS account or create a new one. Once you are in Windows, you can change your login to an offline account using a username and password. There is also a work around if you disable the WiFi adapter during the setup.

There are many guides online and on YouTube on how to setup a dual boot laptop with Linux.

Specific to this laptop, since there is an urgent BIOS update I would setup the Windows install on the laptop to do the update first.

https://www.dell.com/support/home...310-laptop

Then download the Windows 11 Disk Image ISO from MS:

https://www.microsoft.com/softwar.../windows11

To be able to setup a dual boot with Linux, Use Rufus to create a USB thumb drive with the Windows11 installation media and select the "Extended Windows 11 installation" without secure boot to setup the thumb drive. You also need to disable Secure Boot in the Bios settings of the laptop. You can leave TPM on.

https://nerdschalk.com/how-to-use...-usb-drive

For the Windows installer to recognize the drive controller in the laptop you will need to download the Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Driver for the laptop from Dell.

https://www.dell.com/support/home...310-laptop

Extract the driver EXE file using 7zip. In the folder path

Intel_Rapid_Storage_Technology_Driver\Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Driver_8GHWY_WIN64_18.6.4.1022_A03_01\production/Windows10-x64\15063\F6\VMD\

copy the f6vmdflpy-x64 folder with the controller driver files to the root of the Windows 11 install thumb drive or to another thumb drive.

Boot from the Windows 11 install drive. Select "I don't have a product key" and select Windows 11 Home Edition install from the menu. When you get to the prompt to where you want to install Windows, there will be no drives listed. Click 'Load driver' and browse to the location of the folder you copied and select the driver from the list, similar to the process here:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/docu...4859823-16

Your laptop drive will now be listed. To do a new clean Windows 11 install delete all the existing partitions and setup a new partition for for Windows, leaving at least 100GB free space for the Linux installation.

Once you finish the Windows installation and are at your Desktop the Windows copy will be already activated using the digital license on the laptop.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-...20fda32227

You can then setup the Linux install on the free space left. With Arch Linux using the mainstream Linux kernel and firmware with Gnome, to get sound and the fingerprint reader working, I had to install the sof and fprintd firmware manually.

https://github.com/thesofproject/sof

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Fprint

Everything else was setup out of the box.YMMV depending on the Linux distro you choose and how comfortable you are installing Linux.

Yes, the lid and palm rest are aluminum but is a very thin sheet. I was doubtful of the palm rest but after opening the lid, I scratched the inside of the palm area slightly with the screwdriver and it scratched like metal.
Nvme is 2330 a Adata module that is attached to a metal bracket extending to the 2380 length.

If you are OS agnostic, the best value sub 1k is the MacBook air that has dropped to $850. Fastest single threaded performance and pretty comparable multi threaded performance to u series Ryzen 7. Fantastic screen, track pad, keyboard and build quality to boot. I really need windows for my usage, if not I would have pulled the trigger on a MacBook air...

Same in NJ….not able to get the 549 price in store like others that have posted earlier…not sure if the lower in store price is location specific.
