This one requires a filter. I had this one and this requires very frequent cleaning and filter change. Filters were also pretty expensive. Since then, I bought one without the filter.

Yep, it's a trade off. Ultrasonic humidifiers won't have that filter/wick consumable to deal with, but then you're atomizing white dust and other impurities into the air. And warm mist models use a ton of electricity.

So in theory, evaporative humidifiers provide the cleanest air, but require wick maintenance (cleaning with white vinegar and replacing them when it comes time). See that review link I posted above for more info on this.

if you use filtered DI water, the ultrasonic is great because its super quiet

The instructions with my Aircare Evaporator humidifier says to use a Bacteriostatic Water Treatment. It inhibits the growth of bacteria, mildew, and mold from growing on your humidifier filter. Available where humidifiers are sold. For ultrasonic humidifier a demineralization cartridge can be used to reduce the white dust which is caused by minerals in the water. Use it if you see dust on furniture. Lots of white dust might clog your HVAC filter if intake duct vent is nearby.

I have ultrasonic humidifiers I put filtered water in and haven't noticed any white dust.

Also I wouldn't recommend using this for cigars if you can't control the humidity.

How does this compare to the Honeywell HCM-350 which was on sale at about the same price a year ago? Looks like that one has UV and this doesn't. Does it really matter?

Yes, not only did the white dust clog my (brand new) HVAC filter, but it shut off my furnace because of the air restriction. My ultrasonic was not even in the same room as my furnace intake vent! Never would have believed this could happen if it didn't happen to me.

Where there are kids or you live in a warm dry climate - ultrasonic, filter the water if you have any concerns

If kids can't reach it and you live in a cold climate - warm mist

IMO evaporative is most effort and noisiest, but may be necessary for some

I don't have hard water so don't get white dust, ymmv
