Grabbed one last week sold by Amazon.com. I successfully flashed it to the 1.02MK firmware using this USB adadpter:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

and was able to rip a UHD title with MakeMKV.

Keep in mind that if you have a 12th gen Intel, you won't be able to use this to play standard or 4K Blu-ray movies on your PC because Intel removed some required HDCP security thing from their newest chips (citing that the HDCP handshake protocol is a security vulnerability).

Downgrade firmware to v1.02 to make full use of it.

Comes not fully useful out of the box? PASS
LG nerfed the drives with a firmware "update" because of pressure to stop pirates who used such drives to rip 4K movies.

With intel dropping 4K support is this going to be limited in its usefulness?

Any real difference between this model and the WH16NS40 for $10 more other than 14x vs 16x speed? Trying to decide which one to get. They both look supported.

What software does this need to function?
From Amazon review: "This is a barebone drive. You're getting it cheaper because there is no software disk, manual and often not even a box. Physical stores sell these in a plastic bag, not even cardboard box. Don't worry though, my Windows 10 PC detected and installed it without any issues (didn't even have to download anything). You can then go to the LG site and download the software that would have came with it and download it. The software might have some nice features."

In 4 1. I needed a new reader as my old Asus occasionally has bad reads. I don't need 4K support. Hope this lasts as long as my Asus did.

The post just says "without software" so I'm a bit confused at what software is needed
None is really needed. Mine shipped in a brown box with drive, no cable or disc.

Very tempting to get it as a backup for my WH16NS60.

I have one of these and it was great while it lasted. Unfortunately, it died after only a year or two. It happened right in the middle of reading a Blu-Ray. It will still read DVDs but not Blu-Rays. I replaced it with the 16x version. Hopefully that one holds up better.
Treat these like they're disposable/consumable.

The lens assemblies fail over time and have to be replaced, and it's just cheaper to buy a new drive than put in the labor to replace the lens assembly alone.

This is blu-ray rewriter. You updated the firmware and able to read 4K? That would be amazing.

The loss of SGX support assumes that the drive's use case is playback a 4k BluRay disc directly from the drive. However, the primary use case for the drive as demonstrated in this thread is to rip 4k content from the disc. This process would eliminate the associated DRM, eliminating the concern.

Good luck!
