Sale Price does not include sale prices at Amazon unless a deal was posted by a community member.
Keep in mind that if you have a 12th gen Intel, you won't be able to use this to play standard or 4K Blu-ray movies on your PC because Intel removed some required HDCP security thing from their newest chips (citing that the HDCP handshake protocol is a security vulnerability).

I have had multiple of the 16x version of this drive (WH16NS40) and am very unhappy with the reliability they have shown. I have gone through 3x of them ripping a handful of anime series I was collecting over a period of about a year (so maybe like 30 series total?). After about a few months the spindle motor in these things burns out and the disks won't spin up anymore, turning it into a very crunchy-sounding paperweight. It's not like I run TPB or something - these should really last longer than that with the workload I give them.
Perhaps this 14x version is more reliable as the spindle motor won't be taxed quite as hard? I'm unsure.
Considering my experiences are with a different SKU, I don't know what I expect any of you to take from this comment other than the fact that I want to cry about my problems somewhere, but that's my 2p ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Are there any alternative drives or models that are more stable than the one for sale? Primary objective is to have something where I can remove region lock /rip to Blu Ray so I can view the actual movie.
Asus BW-16D1HT. There are also higher models of this drive. WH16NS60.
It's been this price, not exactly a deal. Was cheaper on Amazon and microcenter during BF
in the past year, its been $45 at it's lowest price. $50 is a good price for 2022. it generally sells for $60 on amazon/microcenter/newegg during the past year.

4K IS Blu-ray. Same technology. That you think they're two different things just shows how successful the industry is in separating the two in order for you to pay more for "4K discs." Blu-ray drives are crippled by default for the sole purpose of antipiracy.
No. 4k is referring to the resolution. Blueray is the optical technology to read/write the disk.
Lol no. I can put 480p, 720p, or any other resolution video on a Blu ray disk. Storage technology have nothing to do with what resolution video you can store on it

I use this SATA to USB adapter to plug the drive to my laptop. I don't use an external enclosure and just have the drive sitting on my desk with this connector to my laptop. I can confirm this adapter works to flash the firmware of the drive down to 1.02 to get 4k/UHD capabilities.

What are these still used for now besides legacy comps/servers?
Genuinely curious.
Thanks.
