Yeah, my 11 year old Arc3 is due for replacement soon, I'll probably just wait for a deal on that. Thanks for the info, repped.
Man I'm surprised the battery isn't dead yet! I loved my first Arc3, but the battery failed at around 6-7 years. If you're looking for a replacement, definitely worth replacing it.

If those that are interested....replacing the battery cost more than the shaver is worth, especially if you have to replace the blades. Batteries tend to range from $15-20 and you have to disassemble the entire unit. They started to solder the battery in later models, but I think the early ones can still be replaced from what research I did with my old shavers.

Eventually I gave into consumerism and bought a replacement despite trying to be ecological and not make more waste...it didn't make sense to fix something when it was cheaper to buy a whole new device Frown

I've been able to use the original foils/blades usually for a year or two before replacing them.
Doesn't "a year or two," seem top be a useless answer, particularly for those with heavy beards that need to shave daily??

it was time to replace the blades on my Arc3 - I'll give this one a try instead. Thanks!

This was particularly helpful for me. I think the takeaway for me is that, yes the Arc4 is less agile than the Arc3 but, if I'm not keeping a beard (so just looking for a clean shave) I might actually enjoy a faster shave(?).

Good luck!
Jon
There are different lines and motor performances etc, but for baseline Arc razors, you got it:
Arc3 is best for precision, so if you sometimes keep a beard or mustache.
Arc4+ are best used for complete shaving and will be faster.

(Also for those that haven't used Panasonic razors, give it 30 days and it will blow away your braun / norelco. Also the blades last forever)

It depends how you shave, more passes wear the blades more.

But if you have a really thick beard and shave every day…as long as you treat the foil and blades well and don't overclean every shave, you will get at least a year out of them.

If you have a thick beard then there is no comparison with the other brands. For example I love the Norelco OneBlade, but I don't get more than a week or two before it starts pulling.

I prefer the Arc3 size over the Arc4..l.
Agreed! (See attached image of older Arc3.) The Arc4 is not good unless our head is the size and shape of a volleyball. My face is thin an angular, and the Arc4 is difficult to navigate around my chin, and both upper and lower lips.

Particularly someone looking for a close shave daily. I suspect if you have fair hair and skin that isn't too sensitive the Wahl would do the job. By contrast, I used a Wahl daily when I was doing a sort of stubble/5 o'clock shadow beard look daily.

My favorite razor remains an OLD three-blade version from Panasonic whose battery holds about a single shave these days. I could probably switch the blades, but perhaps it is time to let go (and not have too much fun trying to tear it down and replace the battery myself). Anyone have any notes on going from the three blade model to this larger four blade model? I have a small face so I'm worried this thing is going to be unwieldy and less usable for me.

Good luck!
Jon
The ladies don't complain when it's just that teeny bit hair? So this Panasonic is closer to putting a razor on your face everyday when compared to Wahl's?

Not a bad deal. I am a long time Panasonic shaver user, and honestly, once they got to ARC3, I couldn't tell you that I noticed a significant improvement when they got to ARC4 or ARC5 (the arc6 just got announced if anyone cares). My biggest gripe is that the replacement heads for the newer shavers are ridiculously overpriced and don't seem to last as long as the sets I used to get for my older model Panasonic shavers years ago.

Thanks, FearAndLoathing! Those of us with thick whiskers have far different considerations than those sporting baby-hair whiskers, and I appreciate your thoughts! Oftentimes, the time taken to compose a verbose comment is time well spent, thanks.

Well in fact my wife registered her preference long ago, relegating me to a clean (electric) shave every day (so my boy band bad boy look has been long gone). About the only change as of late was the lockdown beard (that got beyond out of control). This Panasonic is basically just the last step in my eventual progression back from full-on ZZ Top (2020) to normal beard (now) to an eventual return to a daily shave.

Good luck!

If you're looking for a comparison between the Arc4 and the Arc5's there's one here:

https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-...B00JWP8F3I

I have the Arc5 now but had the Arc4 at one point and not sure I could tell the difference.
I think the Arc5 is a little bigger. But you would say their performance is more or less equivalent?

+1. My beard is too much work for that foil to take everyday

Never had Panasonic. How does it compare to a Norelco at that price range( mine finally crapped out after 7 years) ? Also have a braun foil shaver, but not a fan of that.
Let's try this analogy: Panasonic is a Lexus and Norelco is a Lincoln. Both start up, drive and operate similarly, but you'll know the difference when you drive a Lexus.

This is the only electric razor that can get as close to a straight blade on my thick facial hair.
