The Samsung has an edge over this TV.
Sony has been gradually scaling down on their TV's quality/performance for the last few years.Granted they have been keeping up with the latest specification. 2.1 HDMI, Dolby Vision, HDR...etc....
This TV has in my opinion sub-level contrast ratio. Native Contrast 2,290 : 1 local dimming doubles it to 4,049 : 1 but still anemic!!
I bought a Sony TV in 2015 and it had a native 5600: 1 contrast ratio

I went with this over the Samsung equivalent because this has Google TV, and Samsung's Tizen OS is absolute garbage which strangles the life out of your TV after a year.
The x95j is solid, but it shines above all others when it comes to upscaling old content.

I love how people use one example to speak to the whole brand
I am going to bet that this Tv will get much brighter than ANY Sony you bought in 2015. Your 2015 Sony also had no provision for keeping any color or brightness for watching TV off angle
Also...at the top end Sony LCD's still killing it...Z8H and Z9J are two very good examples from the last two years
