Yes, it does work that way. I've been using Tile for at least 4 years. Your tile needs to ping off another Tile user's device for the location to be sent. Heck, it's even spelled out right on Tile's webpage [thetileapp.com]. "Network extenders" have flip-flopped over the years, but here's [techcrunch.com] an interesting article. I have yet to hear/see any of this actually implemented though.

Overall, unless Tile get agreements for a HUGE network of non-cell phone devices to help locate their Tiles, finding lost items is lightyears easier with AirTags. At the end of the day, that's the most important thing, finding a lost item on this planet.

The only downside to AirTags is that it's for Apple devices only. So if you're an Android family, you're out.

You should report package theft to the police immediately. They may be able to identify the thief with your camera footage and then track them using any cellphone registered and carried on that person.


Not sure how any Bluetooth tracker will help prevent package theft unless the sender of the package inserts the tracker inside the package. In case, the sender does insert the tracker inside the package, and for an additional purchase of Tile's premium subscription service, you can see GPS history, provided it is within the specified range of Tile network (any Apple or Android phone device, regardless of who owns them, that have Tile app downloaded and activated on them.)

These things are very hit or miss.

I have many of them, and they have saved my ass a few times by either losing my keys or losing my phone.

However, nearly 25% of them just stop working and it isnt due to an old battery.

I think that anti-stalking feature is a good thing.

Maybe the news article is about an incident prior to the release of that feature by Apple?

Yes, within Bluetooth range of any phone with a Tile app. Though orders of magnitude smaller than network of all apple phones, Tile has sold 40 million trackers so far, so the Tile app is also on millions of phones.

OK, they sold 40 million - I'd wager at least 20 million of those are in a landfill somewhere after being lost or thrown away for being useless garbage. A few years ago I wanted something to track lost keys and lost phone, and opted for Trackr which are the same as Tile except at that time only Trackr had an option for replaceable batteries. The concept is the same for Tile and Trackr - BT signal and app on your phone locates the device, but only if the battery isn't dead, only of the device has a clear line of sight to the phone, and if you lose it outside your home then it can only be found if somebody else is within a few feet of it, also has the app running on their phone, and also if there's a clear signal their phone picks up, and again only if the battery isn't dead. I found that any time I misplaced my phone at home, it was just easier to have somebody else in the house call my phone to make it ring, the Trackr was useless. Outside the house, I never found anything lost using it. Never. Don;t bother with these things, the reason they're being discounted and appear here on SD alot is they're likely going out of business and dumping inventory. Trackr shut down last August so now their app is not supported, and that network of users is gone, Tile will not be far behind them. As with all thing Apple does, they will inevitably dominate the market with their airtags. Don't waste your time and money on this trash, it's useless.

Lately been misplacing keys and was literally about to look into AirTag as we have iPhones, is this a good option for that or should we spend the extra and stick with Apple?

If you are getting this for your pet or anything living:

Jiobit is the way.

I would have lost my dog a number of times without it. Built-in cellular so you don't have to rely on chance of somebody happening by with a phone.

Assuming your keys will always be within your house/office/car; this Tile will serve that purpose.

AirTags are costlier and superior because they also support Ultra Wideband technology in addition to Bluetooth. That addition allows them to provide Precision Finding guidance on iPhones11 and newer.

Agree, but think Samsung can compete in the space as well. Don't see Tile surviving given the AirTag SmartTag competition.
