Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank mildewman
It's currently track season, so I loaned him my G-Shock (just so he could try it out, and see if that's work for him). He thanked me profusely, but I talked to his mom and we both agreed it was kind of heavy (and looked huge/bulky on him, which is less of a consideration).
Anyway, something like this *definitely* fits the 'good for cross country' bill, and it looks a lot slimmer/lighter than my G-Shock, but I was wondering whether anyone knows if it'll do lap/split times. I've never owned a Garmin before.
2.) It absolutely will give splits. The Garmin Connect phone app will show splits, as will the online Garmin account for that activity. I have it upload to Strava (it does so automatically) and that also shows the splits. But the best part is that it will show the splits directly on the watch itself when the activity is completed. I run without my phone often and used to dislike having to get to my phone to upload the activity to see splits. The Instinct shows split right on the watch, a feature I love.
If anyone cares, the battery life is phenomenal. I have used this to hike the Grand Canyon, both Rim to River to Rim and Rim to Rim. The longest of these was about eleven hours, with the GPS on the whole way. Apple watch users had dead devices halfway in while the Garmin had almost half the charge left at the end, something serious hikers might want to consider.
EDIT: After thinking about this, I overstated the battery life. I did charge it for about 20 - 30 minutes at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon when we took a snack break there. Still, with how much charge was left, it could have made the hike without that charge, and I still do feel the battery life is great.
The one upside that might not apply to you is that they standardized the cable across the lines. I had three Garmins at one point and used one cable for all of them. The cables and and adapters are cheap on AliExpress anyway...
I buy strap bands from AliExpress for around $8. The cheaper bands that they sell on there aren't that bad either. If you buy the Instinct specific ones, they are a little tricky to get on but so are the originals.
Works good with iPhone- sometimes you have to reconnect if you go out of range too long but good for alerts and the battery life is over a week if you aren't using the gps. It does not have internal music capabilities but I enjoy the ruggedness and the tracking features. I had given up watches long ago but this one is useful enough that I keep it on.
