i'm complete opposite. too many intrusions into a work day. phone, computer, now watch all telling me same thing (oh someone emailed ! someone texted ! omg !)
Not solar. Solar would cost around 250 after discount when you find a deal
Keep in mind solar is fatter, I've hit the regular black instinct and on first use I've got 21 days on a single charge. I don't use most of the features other than push notifications which are messages, calendar, and locks on my doors. I've been quite hesitant in going the smartwatch route because I didn't like charging my watch daily, but this watch is the happy media. Sure I downgraded from titanium to silicone but surprisingly comfortable. They do have titanium straps but they're more than the watch at this range.

Excellemt watch! Have been using it for several years and have zero complaints! Battery lasts a week or so with 45 minutes running every day.

Maybe i missed it, but does this watch tell you when you're getting a phone call? I see it let's you know when you're getting a regular text but wondering if someone is calling you. Thanks.
It does alert me when I get a phone call. Sometimes, there is a ~5 second delay though - I see my phone vibrating, but not see it on the watch 'til 5 seconds later....which could be a deal breaker for some as the person could hang up by then.

Looking for something like this as a gift… a family member wants something like this *primarily* for cross country (and is currently saving up to buy it himself), but he also runs track so he also kind of wants something that can keep track of lap/split times.

It's currently track season, so I loaned him my G-Shock (just so he could try it out, and see if that's work for him). He thanked me profusely, but I talked to his mom and we both agreed it was kind of heavy (and looked huge/bulky on him, which is less of a consideration).

Anyway, something like this *definitely* fits the 'good for cross country' bill, and it looks a lot slimmer/lighter than my G-Shock, but I was wondering whether anyone knows if it'll do lap/split times. I've never owned a Garmin before.
1.) Yes, it definitely notifies on phone calls and shows the number or name of caller. Sometimes it does just give number even though phone shows name, an oddity I can live with.

2.) It absolutely will give splits. The Garmin Connect phone app will show splits, as will the online Garmin account for that activity. I have it upload to Strava (it does so automatically) and that also shows the splits. But the best part is that it will show the splits directly on the watch itself when the activity is completed. I run without my phone often and used to dislike having to get to my phone to upload the activity to see splits. The Instinct shows split right on the watch, a feature I love.

If anyone cares, the battery life is phenomenal. I have used this to hike the Grand Canyon, both Rim to River to Rim and Rim to Rim. The longest of these was about eleven hours, with the GPS on the whole way. Apple watch users had dead devices halfway in while the Garmin had almost half the charge left at the end, something serious hikers might want to consider.

EDIT: After thinking about this, I overstated the battery life. I did charge it for about 20 - 30 minutes at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon when we took a snack break there. Still, with how much charge was left, it could have made the hike without that charge, and I still do feel the battery life is great.

FYI - Garmin uses a proprietary charging connection. You can get extras pretty cheap on eBay - but it's pretty annoying that it doesn't use a more common cable (microUSB or USB-C)

The one upside that might not apply to you is that they standardized the cable across the lines. I had three Garmins at one point and used one cable for all of them. The cables and and adapters are cheap on AliExpress anyway...

How about the watch bands? Anything close to the OEM quality - they seem way overpriced on the Garmin site.

I buy strap bands from AliExpress for around $8. The cheaper bands that they sell on there aren't that bad either. If you buy the Instinct specific ones, they are a little tricky to get on but so are the originals.

Anyone know if this works good on an Iphone? What are your thoughts on this? My husband doesn't like the look of the Apple Watch- he's like a round dial & he's outdoorsy too. Looking into getting this for him. Thanks!!

Works good with iPhone- sometimes you have to reconnect if you go out of range too long but good for alerts and the battery life is over a week if you aren't using the gps. It does not have internal music capabilities but I enjoy the ruggedness and the tracking features. I had given up watches long ago but this one is useful enough that I keep it on.
Also tracks your sleep too
