after trying half a dozen thermometers I ended up going back to a good old "mercury" analog one for most accurate

takes longer but there is no question of the actual temperature

just remember to shake it a few times before using to "reset" the liquid

I also highly highly recommend you get those disposable thermometer covers on sale somewhere, you really do not want to be constantly washing it when you are not feeling well
