You should consider something besides a savings account . With inflation approaching double digits, the interest rate you are getting is definitely not keeping up. ( Ally offers free managed portfolios , that could potentially return much better than a traditional savings account)
Especially if the money won't be needed. Just a thought.

i bonds were 8.5% maybe 9.1% now it's the smart way to keep earning.. it's guaranteed. ask your financial planner about them. i think only 1 purchase per yr up to 10k per person. silly not to buy inflationary bonds at this day and age

Though not intended as endorsement, any reason you aren't recommending FZROX? The ZERO funds are admittedly Fidelity-only.

Good luck!
Jon
FZKAX provides more diversity than FZROX. FZROX holds 2361 funds and FSKAX has 3875. FSKAX can be transferred out of Fidelity to other brokerages. You cannot transfer FZROX outside of Fidelity. You would need to sell your holdings (and pay capital gains) first.

FSKAX is also more established and has larger net assets (75 bil vs 12 bil).

If you are holding these funds inside an IRA, obviously taxes aren't an issue, plus you can convert FZROX to FSKAX pretty easily.

In all honesty, you will be fine with either.

Why even make it optional? My 11 yr old has had one (savings acct) for 7 years now... he knows that for Christmas and birthday money he spends half and saves half. He's got over 2k at this point and knows he can't touch it till he starts driving... even then it'll be emergency need only. Though we did give him alot of the money we got for him from stimulus money. His 4 year old sister is doing the same thing. Need to move them into money markets or something but I'm not overly worried about it.

This is good parenting and more people should do it. Further, that money should be *invested*, not just saved. A normal savings account is a money losing system. But getting your kid into the habit of saving and investing while they're going is a great way to kickstart them towards an early retirement or a much more comfortable standard retirement.

Investing is the way.

Yes, and no. I have done 529 since my kid was born and the investment choices and returns are crap. This gives you more investment options and much more flexibility of how to use the money. Everyone says 529 but what I have found it that 529 ain't what it's cracked up to be.

If you don't like the 529 investment options from your broker, then you simply need to switch to another broker with better/different options.

Wrong. If you invest in a diverse mix of good companies and hold them for long durations of time you almost never can lose.

If your parents taught you how to invest you'd see that it doesn't have to be risky.

If you invest $1000 into a broad index fund at age 18 and reinvest the dividends until retirement age you are much more likely to end up with $15,000 than $0 on that $1000 you invested.

Sure, you could be a bonehead and chase penny stocks or get into borrowing and leverage.. but that is basically gambling... So, don't do that. Instead use compounding returns from incredibly well run companies to grow your wealth. FZROX or FZKAX in an IRA for 20+ years isn't going to be gambling.

All of this is just my opinion. I am no advisor.

I think I'd do government i bonds. You get 9% return on them right now.

And, I think I'd buy shares of Berkshire Hathaway for kids.. they do share buybacks instead of paying dividends and they have been shown to manage their company well.

Also, having your children buy into established growth companies that don't pay much in dividends yet can let the investment grow without causing a tax burden for your kids until they sell the stocks.

I am no financial advisor, these are all my opinions only.

Yes, I actually opened an account just so my daughter could get that, talked to customer service twice now, still no $50. I am unimpressed. The first time, they said that the passport I sent in wasn't good enough for identification (Even though it was listed as acceptable) so I sent in SS card and Birth Certificate, and they sent a debit card, so I am sure now that the account is open, but yet, well over ten days (which is what I read) and still no money.

Can someone recommend an affordable financial advisor to handhold me a bit so I, a single mom, can help my 15yr old set something else up other than depositing money into her BoA Savings account.

missing the point. its not about generating wealth or growing the money for the kid its about teaching the value of saving, planning for emergencies, and deferred gratification.

Hi, I am not a financial advisor but you can put $5000 per year at tax time in paper US Treasury I Bonds and up to $10,000 per year into digital I Bonds from treasurydirect.gov. Once your child has a job I'd also set up a ROTH IRA in Fidelity. In it I'd buy FZROX and SCHD when I can and reinvest any dividends SCHD is paying me back into SCHD.

If you want to get investing in the stock market and can't get a ROTH IRA because your kid doesn't have earned income yet, then I'd just buy FZROX and fractional shares of BERKSHIRE.A or BERKSHIRE.B in a standard Fidelity investment account because I don't want to receive dividends in anything but my ROTH IRA so I can avoid having those taxed as income.

Also, ALWAYS make sure you set up the beneficiaries for your retirement and investment accounts. This is easy and saves people a lot of trouble if anything did happen.

In summary, get government I bonds, buy FZROX and get a ROTH IRA as soon as kids are earning income to shield gains from taxation within the ROTH individual retirement account. All of this can be done of Fidelity very easily.
