I am talking about Costco as a retailer and their quarterly earnings are always massive. Every retailer has catchy item they lose money on that is designed and planted to become a watercooler conversation subject for organic marketing.

Now guess if the massive Costco profits (hugely higher than Target, Walmart, Kroger, Sams) comes from customers pocket or Mars.
Costco markups are generally low. They make money on their membership fees.

Profits don't always correlate with cost at the consumer level. There are many, many reasons why Costco has higher profitability than competitors while at the same time, delivering a lower cost to their customers. A few reasons ...

1. Buying power from suppliers
2. Logistic superiority
3. Staffing overhead
4. Real estate costs
5. Membership fees
6. Select high margin products
7. Partnerships that they take a cut out of
8. Brand loyalty that puts customers buying from them above other retailers

Walmart and Kmart were head-to-head competitors. They offered incredibly similar products, had similar retail footprints (for a time), and paid the same wages. Eventually, Walmart shut down Kmart. It essentially came down to organizational excellence. Walmart had it and Kmart did not.

Frankly, it's no different than Amazon. They eat every other online retailer's lunch primarily due to the operational effectiveness. They have leveraged that advantage over the years so that they can now expand into new market segments. They can be wildly successful while offering the best prices on the products that matter the most.

Costco is the most profitable retailers on the planet, it has never lost money. Think about that next time you buy something and "think" you saved money.
Their real profit comes from membership sales

I hate Fitbit ever since they got bought out. The whole premise of the product is to track data points over time, but if you want to see more than 7 days worth of data you have to buy their subscription service for $10/month.

Suddenly a $110 watch costs you $230 for the first year, or $350 for 2 years. At that point you should have just gotten a real smartwatch.

I've been using Fitbit Charge 5 for 2 weeks. GPS tracking without a phone is useless: I get different results every time I do measured mile. In fact, I get better results with a cheaper Mi Band 5. I'll be returning the FitBit.

I'm not sure what this is supposed to reference. A Costco membership is $60, but is basically incidental for a lot of people since they already shop there anyway. At worst it's $60 divided by how many times you shop there per year.

If you're taking about the Fitbit membership, I think you're undercounting it.

There's not a watch out there that can provide an accurate reading.
Not sure I understand your statement. I consider my Apple Watch fairly accurate or accurate enough to mirror my effort when exercising (mostly Tabata or cycling sprints). Problem with the Fitbit is it didn't show the change. The data was fairly flat or missed intervals throughout the workout. Apple Watch captured it correctly every time. Problem with the Apple Watch is the battery. If I wear it all day, it barely has enough left at the end of day for my workouts. Sometimes it dies in the middle of exercising and I lose the data. The simple solution is charge it in the middle of the day but doesn't happen regularly. The fitbit and now garmin's battery life is amazing compared to the Apple Watch.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

i bought this from the last slickdeal for $120. i upgraded from charge 2 but after 2 weeks of use, the screen froze and i had to drain the battery for it to reset. the watch doesnt sync automatically and i rarely got notifications so i returned it. i really wanted to support fitbit but seems like it got worse.

I got this the last time and returned it. It had very inaccurate heart rate when exercising. Worked with Fitbit Helpdesk and they kept having me reset it. Ended up getting a Garmin which I like a lot more.
I got a Garmin watch as an Xmas gift, it was given especially for the heart rate feature. I love it! I've been to the ER twice (coincidence) since then, and it's right on the money!

Wish we had a Costco here as this is the one I'd get to replace my Inspire 2. Main reasons being this one has GPS and a screen you can actually see in the sun.

HRM seems to be pretty decent for everything but weightlifting according to the reviews I've watched.

Wrist based monitors are generally less accurate than a chest strap monitor. I have a wahoo chest strap monitor that I use along with a fitbit charge 4 now and an apple watch previously. Both are a few bpms off from the chest strap reading, but the apple watch was usually closer to the chest strap readout than the charge 4 i have now
I have a wahoo also and an Apple Watch Series 6. The Apple Watch is usually within 1 bpm of the wahoo if not the same. I consider myself to be a health enthusiast and in very good shape with body fat below 10% and workouts almost 2Xs a day, cardio in the morning and weight lifting in the evening. Almost never use the Wahoo HR Chest strap nowadays unless I want to track my runs for cadence and a more detailed analysis via the wahoo app.

I had a Charge 2 that died after 13 months (right after warranty expired), then asked for a discount code to get a Charge 3, which lasted 16 months before the plastic that connects to the band broke off. I definitely don't abuse them (WFH full time due to Covid), but seems like Fitbit has really nailed planned obsolescence. Has anyone had good experience with their devices lasting significantly longer than their warranty period?

I'm sincerely asking since I would like another fitness tracker and Fitbit does make decent products for the price, but at this point I don't know if I'm a sucker that keeps giving them money.
