the one thing about ultra short throw is that they are ideally projected on a perfectly flat surface. Any waves in your screen or wall or sheet or whatever your projecting on will be very magnified because of the extreme angle of incident. In my opinion, ultra short throws work best with fixed projection screens, a smooth flat wall, or possibly a drop screen that is tab tensioned and not inexpensive pulldown screens or a fabric sheet or wavy sheetrock/plaster even wall texture could be trouble.
I have a 77" OLED and a 120" UST.

No one cares about the OLED after they see the projector.

Two things I would like to add that people didnt list about this projector. First which is big its one of the first to support 3D a lot of the USTs in this form factor do not.

2nd and pretty important if your a gamer the latency is :67.6ms (4K UHD, 60 Hz) / 67.1ms (1080p, 60Hz) rated input lag (SmartFIT and PureMotion disabled) which while not under 50ms should be close enough to not have to many ghosting issues even on twitch games. Its night and day better over some with the same form factor that were over 90ms or even 100ms which would be a pain to game on.

It depends on how much light you have in the room. ALR just rejects lights from certain angles so ambient light doesent interefere with the projectors image from standard viewing angles.

If you are happy with the brightness of your current set up, you will likely be fine with a non ARL screen.

I have a non ARL screen and am quite happy as my room has only 1 window and ambient light is easily controlled. I ceiling mounted my UST projector to keep kids from bumping it. UST cant use standard ALR screens if ceiling mounted since the projector is shining from above.
HardFive, what color screen do u have. Looking at elite cinegrey vs cinewhite (non-alr)

I thought that ALR screens not only reject light from certain angles (mainly above the screen), but also reflects light better from light sources coming from below the screen (such as from a UST projector).

Same question here. Is an ALR screen a "must have" for UST or just "nice to have"? With my current 1080p regular projector, I directly project to a wall and it seems ok to me. A 120" ALR screen costs about another $2k, which seems too much for a screen. If that's a must for a UST projector, then probably I'll pass.

Same here i don't have a cable running below the screen either. That's another issue I need to figure and I can't go in wall now that the basement is done.

If you don't have ambient lights or in a dark room, you don't need it. I had mine projected on the wall for a year and enjoyed it. But then I got the ALR on BF, it is result is dramatic better.

The problem with UST is you shine the light from down to up, so it will cast shadow of your wall is not completely smooth. Regular projectors don't have that issue.

I have ambient light in my room but my current epson 2150 does a decent job with it. As long as my elite screen will same as epson I think I should be fine.

Saw this price and had been considering this projector until I realized I could fit a 135" screen, and may as well go as big as I can reasonably fit. Really limits the available USTs when going above 120". Not sure if I should just suck it up and stay 120" and go for this one while it's on sale. I have the room to do a traditional projector too, but based on research suggesting the UST is pretty much as good, figured why bother with all the hassle. May have to if I want the larger size. Any thoughts?

I have the VAVA version of this - and it rocks. Pair it with a screen made for UST projectors and you will have a hard time going back to a puny TV ever again. I have a 120" X-Y screen... between the projector and screen, it was about $3,000.

I wouldn't trade this for an OLED setup. The same $$ would not get me an OLED that's anywhere near that size.

What do u mean by vava version? Are they identical units sold by another company?

I thought I wanted the same but now I can't go back after having a 120" screen since it feels just like a real theater to the entire family. I got an acoustically transparent screen instead of ALR (since I can control light as you can) and now the audio comes directly from the characters and action on the screen which is another huge plus for me. I still wish I had better blacks but not that much.
Besides size, this is the biggest advantage of a projector. Ideally, you want your left, right, and center channel to be identical. For example, I have Klipsch RF-7s for my L and R channel, but I have an RC 64 as my center. This is because my regular TV cannot accommodate a huge standing RF 7, the RC 64 lays flat, not vertically, usually either above of below the TV..

With a projector you simply put the matching speaker in a standing position behind the screen and viola, absolutely perfect sound.

I have this screen. Im very happy with it. comparable to cinewhite.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PQ86...KMNZ?psc=1

I needed a motorized screen, so this was a good fit for budget, and I wanted a tensioned screen since any deflection is amplified with UST projectors extreme casting angle.

Cinegray is better for gain but to be honest, my projector is plenty bright. Maybe ignorance is bliss.

They do. Some more then others. Look at the screens "gain". If you dont have light issues, you dont need an ALR screen.

That says nothing of the projector quality. All that does is reaffirm what has been proven time after time; people are generally drawn to size, over anything else, and think bigger is better. There's no way your projector actually compares to your OLED.
I have been a hard core HT guy for over 20 years and a 120 inch projector is a superior viewing experience to a much smaller OLED. Size wins every time. For example I enjoyed my 82 inch DLP more than my 65 inch OLED.

Of course most set ups are not appropriate to a projector (you need a totally dark dedicated HT room) but they really are the best if you can pull them off.

I have this and its awesome. I got it on Amazon last year when it wen on sale for 2999. Only disappointment is that this one doesn't have eARC for Dolby Atmos to work with my Sonos ARC.

This or a 77 inch OLED for my basement? I am ok with spending upto $3000 and can get zero ambient lighting in the basement and have a whole empty wall that i can use to project stuff. Please help.

I want good blacks because literally every movie and TV show has a lot of dark scenes.

I have an Epsom 5050UB with a 120" screen in the living room and a LG CX 48" OLED as my primary monitor for work and PC gaming. Projector will never gets the perfect blacks like an OLED, but there is something awesome about the sheet size of the screen that fills your entire field of vision, even when you are sitting 12 ft away on a couch.
