The credits are basically discounted books, 1 credit is good for one purchase. Depending on your plan they cost ~$10-15. While Audible sells books for $20-35+.
Within the last year they rolled out Audible Plus which is an additional service. This is a library of books you can access while you have an active sub. If you let your sub expire, you can no longer access those books. But anything you've purchased with credits or cash is still accessible in your library whether you have a sub or not.

No mystery.. they just F'ed up; sold books they didn't have the rights to, delted them off peoples devices, got called on it, apologized for being dimwits, lost a subsequent lawsuit. & provided refunds.
