Quick thoughts:

From what I can tell, this thing doesn't go on sales nearly as often as its 2020 variant used to last year. This does appear to be an all-time low for this 2021, 11th-gen version.
The 2020 version I have is my favorite of the many Chromebooks I've owned. It's not perfect (horrid speakers), but unreal value-to-dollars.
If memory serves, the 2021 is almost identical to the 2020 with exception of upgrade from 10th to 11th gen CPU (good) and moving from having USB-C ports on both sides to both on the left side (bad). If I was in the market I'd be happy with a 2020 version for $100 less.
OP says they are happy they didn't pull trigger on certified Acer refurb for $465, but I'd say that is arguable the better deal. I've purchased a bunch of refurbs from acercertified.com and they've all look brand new and worked absolutely perfectly. Chrome OS powerwashing is trivial to do. Saving the $35 even now would be tempting to me, but I understand if not everyone would agree.

There's an upcoming Acer Chromebook 513 that will have an identical form factor and screen, but with a MediaTek Kompanio 1380 processor. It's a 5-series instead of 7-series so will likely lead to a fairly low price point, especially during sales and for refurbs. This new MediaTek CPU is said to have impressive performance too. You can read more about the upcoming 513 here [pcmag.com], and see early video review here [youtube.com]. There's an article on the new MediaTek chip here [chromeunboxed.com].

Unfortunately yes -- from what I've read the speakers are identical. What I really wanted from the 2021 version were better speakers (which it doesn't have) and a fingerprint reader for quick log-in (which no 2021 US variants have -- only found some sold in Europe here [acer.com]). I stuck with the 2020 refurb I've been using happily for over a year now.

So the 2021 version has the same crappy speakers?

Based on reviews/comparisons the 2021 version also has slightly better build quality and a few other small improvements. But more importantly, the 2020 version that goes on sale is much lower spec'ed - i3, 4gb, and 64gb emmc instead of nvme. This version is probably overkill for a chromebook, but I plan on putting Linux on it so I'll take the extra power and future proofing.

The Recertified deal is actually even cheaper since it seems they don't charge tax. I have no issues with acer refurbs - my current chromebook is from there and going on 5 years strong - but I'm ok paying the difference here to have it new and for the easy returns/exchanges. If the refurb deal gets even better in the next 45 days I can always return the BB one.

I got the 2020 model from Acer refurb for $360 no tax. At first glance the speakers & mic were not working but found out the headphone jack had something stuck in it. I went into the settings & confirmed unit was reading headphone jack in use so I changed the output to speakers & mic. Unit worked fine but paying $360 with something jammed in the headphone port was a non-starter for me. I RMA'ed the unit & they had to replace the whole motherboard which unfortunately was backordered. Soooooo 7 weeks later after a once a week phone call to customer service I received another refurb unit today. In the process of going over whole unit later today but I must admit this is a gorgeous chromebook. Fingers crossed no problems will arise.

This vs the Lenovo Duet 5? I really like the OLED screen and the fact that the Snapdragon processor is silent and sips battery.

Anyone pick one of these up? I did today and it overall is a nice machine however the speakers have major issues. The right speaker on mine crackles and pops intermittently. A reboot or a powerwash will temporally fix the problem but it will come back. Other people seem to have this issue as well and some say it could be the new ChromeOS version. Not sure if I am going to keep this now because it is pretty annoying. The screen is beautiful, the keyboard is not bad, however the speakers are trash. I can live with the speakers and the tinny sound but the snap crackle and pop is bad. Happens in all application too, stadia, youtube, and netflix. Hopefully this gets fixed before my return window.

If you dont have the bestbuy card yet, you can sign up and get 20% off. That seems like the real deal! However, BB wouldn't instantly approve me (always seems to happen, even with an 800+ credit rating..something about not having an actual address) so I went for the refurb deal. Will report back.

I only see 10% back in rewards promo.
Can you direct me to the promo you are talking about?
Thanks!

Be on the lookout for an open box version if you're feeling patient. During the $529 sale I was able to snag one for $406+tax but I had to wait ~5 days for one to show up on the Best Buy website. Great machine. Screen is amazing and I like the form factor. The specs are incredible for the price if you plan on putting Linux on it and doing anything beyond the normal chromebook tasks. It's super snappy. The speakers are definitely crappy and the fan kicks on a lot but that doesn't bother me.

Just wanted to say I have the 2020 version, i5, and really love this chromebook. Even though some say an i5 is overkill for a chromebook, its so quick loading pages. I read that 2021 has a couple improvements . I don't think I'll ever go back to a 16:9 inch screen. The quality of this screen is great. My next chromebook in a couple years will probably be a no fan processor.
Also like others have mentioned the speakers are awful. My next chromebook will have some decent speakers.

I got a laptop only version (open and nothing with it!) of the 2020 version 8gb/256gm nvme with no ps for under 300. Speakers suck as I knew but this deal was too good to pass up.

Is open box dependent on location/store returns? I checked the site daily during the last sale but never saw the open box section available, but I suppose they probably sell quick.

exactly - those only pop up due to returns and the like. You have to get lucky to find those open box units. The good news is that they are priced relative to the price of the new units, so the mark downs are substantial (when they are available).

Night and day comparison, having had both I would not recommend the Duet as a primary laptop option, it's more of a tablet with a keyboard option if that makes sense.

The horsepower is also a completely unfair comparison, the Spin 713 (in the world of Chromebooks) is more of a productivity workhorse with the Core i5 and 3:2 screen while the Duet is better suited for more media consumption with the ability to dabble in productivity in a pinch with it's ARM processor and widescreen display.....which is a beauty of a screen btw.

Ask yourself what your use case is, if it leans more towards leisure I'd say the Duet, if you actually want to give it a go with a Chromebook as your primary machine for all possible tasks...I'd say the 713.

A 3rd middle-ground option not mentioned but worth researching: Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2, it has a QLED (not AMOLED but better than IPS screens in my experience), Core i3 (10th gen) but because of the 16:9 aspect ratio it definitely lends itself to being a more media friendly machine while having more power inside than the Duet 5.

You will hear the fan noise on the 713 & SGC2, though it is quieter on the Samsung tbh.

The Duet is also fixed storage, no micro SD slot for additional storage, the 713 & Samsung that I mentioned do have micro SD slots. The 713 also has the advantage of having a user-replaceable NVME storage option as well, none of the models have the option to upgrade RAM.
