Rumor has it Amazon will be increasing their prime membership to $139.

The price of Amazon Prime Membership will increase from $119/year to $139/year. The change will occur sometime in the next month or so (possibly on March 1, 2022). Prime Student price is also increasing from $59/year to $69/year.

Suggestion

You can lock in the $119 price by purchasing a Gift of Prime membership. These cost $119 right now and they never expire – set your Prime membership not to auto-renew by cancelling the membership using the 'Manage My Membership' tab, and then when it expires you'll apply the Gift of Prime to your account. (You won't lose your full current membership year when cancelling membership, as will be clear on the final screen; they even give the option on the final screen to 'pause' membership.)

Come on man. This increase is a 16% increase since 2018. Inflation over years: 2019 (2.3%, 2020 (1.4%), 2021 (7.0%). Be smarter about your assumptions.

Yes. Years ago I made the mistake of letting my account expire so that I can use a prime membership code I bought on sale. Found out after I was no longer on the grandfathered plan. My family members were booted.

Is there a limit to how many gifts of membership you can buy / use yourself? What about alternating between you / partners accounts?
There's no limit, but you need to buy one at a time and you need change the date of the Gift of Prime or the email address

Even happier I've never been a Primer. My shipping speed has increased.

I can also very frequently find a better price for the same item somewhere else. It's all about patience, which Prime has destroyed. Don't hate.

Is this affecting the EBT/medicaid discount? Haven't found any info saying it's changing from $5.99/mo

Does doing this mess with anything about being n the grandfathered Prime plans? With gifting yourself memberships are you basically just using a 'gift card' to pay for the renewal? I'm looking for it not to lapse and have to start a new membership again.

An Amazon rep told me if I cancel my membership I'll lose my remaining days of prime. Is this actually true? (In effort to not auto renew to use the gift of prime membership)

If you use this you lose grandfathered account status, to keep grandfathered status you have to pay full price

You can still get free shipping with $35 minimum orders. He has a point
Everyone gets free shipping with $25 purchase at Amazon. Our Prime membership expired 12/26 and due to financial reasons, I have been waiting to renew until we get financially settled (other memberships were also expiringatthr same time so I needed to spread out the renewals). I am still planning to renew Prime membership next week before the price jump, but not having Prime membership has not been that bad. We just need to have $25+ worth of items to order for free shipping and choose "free shipping" option. It has actually prevented us to place impulse orders, so I feel like we are saving money for not having Prime membership.

Ending membership allows you to keep to end of term (there are no partial refunds) and will not renew.

I believe it's $35 now Frown
I placed an order yesterday without Prime membership and the minimum for free shipping was $25. Did Amazon raise that to $35 today? I can't see that info since Amazon gave me "free shipping for additional orders for 24 hours".

Whats the point of prime anymore. Nothing is ever shipped within 2 days. If its something popular and they have in my local warehouse I usually get it in a day or two. But most stuff takes about a week. Thinking about just cancelling.

Thanks for the info. I haven't kept up with the benefits of the new household feature for Prime so not sure if it's changed much. I remember back then I decided I wanted to keep it grandfathered for some reason, is it still the case that grandfathered might work best if you just share it with 2 adults?

**EDIT** Never mind, just figured out new household is only 2 adults total and same household.

What are the benefits of the grandfathered plan??? And how do you determine if you have it? TIA.
Amazon Prime membership used to let you have additional 4 accounts attached to your Prime membership and those 4 accounts didn't have to be "family members living in the same household". (Technically, yes, the additional 4 accounts were supported to be living the same household as you are but you didn't have to show the proof to Amazon.) So, many main Prime membership holders had their family/friends/random strangers attached to their main Prime membership account and each person pays the 1/5 fee. Now, you can only have 1 another person from household share your main Prime membership.

My sister pays for Prime, and I receive free shipping benefits through her grandfathered plan. It appears if I wanted to do that on a new plan, I'd have to share my digital wallet with her:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/help/...redirect=1

That makes sense for a household (married couple) but less so for extended family.

It would be nice to have access to Prime Video / Music, but that's certainly not worth $139/yr. Also, my wife shares my Amazon account which makes it tricky to hide gift purchases near the holidays.. where if I paid for my own, I could share with her.

As for free shipping, I could do without the two-day shipping most times, and wait til I've spent $35... EXCEPT so many of my purchases are Slickdeals only available for a short time. If Amazon had a way to let you go ahead and buy something at the sale price, and then leave it queued up until you had an order of a certain size, that'd be great. (Similar to their Amazon Day deliveries). Otherwise you risk the price going up on your sale item before you fill your cart up to $35. Of course, most of those sale items I don't really need so if I had to wait, I'd probably end up spending less.

Amazon tells me I placed 170 orders in 2021, and similar the year before. A full priced Prime membership would be about $.80 per order. I guess that's still a pretty small price to pay for the convenience. My median order was about $11. Less than 10% of my orders were over $35.
