If you use Gmail, many (but not all) sites will let you use Gmail's "plus sign" feature so you don't have to use a different email address. Use "[email protected]" for the address - everything from the plus sign to the at symbol gets ignored by Gmail (it delivers to "[email protected]"), but it looks like a different address to the site and you can filter on it in your mailbox. I'll usually use the site and date after the plus (something like "WestDigi20220205").

Not buying so don't know if this works here, but it's handy to know about.

4" is the drive dimension, but they're still 3.5" form factor. I believe 3.5" references the size of the platters in the drive.

On the subject of these drives though, at 7200rpm enterprise drives they're probably somewhat loud, and reviews seem to confirm that. They're intended to be in racks in a server farm where you won't hear them over the din of fans running. If you're buying these for a NAS, I'd only do that if your NAS is somewhere you can't hear it.

also just throwing a "." anywhere in the first part of the gmail addres.
Yeah, that's a good backup option when the plus sign fails, but the plus sign option lets you know exactly when and where the address was given out in case you're wondering how you got on some spam list.

It is a CMR drive - right in the spec. This is not just any 16tb drive, this is the best out there meant for consumers to buy (based on my humble research).
Gotcha, so it uses special disks inside compared to regular platters?

That's very handy information I was unaware of.

looks like you half assed your research. these drives spin very fast, and because of that they eat more power, they get hot, and they get loud. VERY loud.

there are other CMR drives better equipped for home use, like the red plus. they are quieter and cooler. unless you are running a bunch of virtual machines or running some kind of heavy I/O database, the red plus and ironwolf drives are better suited for home use.

having said that, these are so cheap that it's hard to pass on them even if you are looking for quiet drives. i ended up buying 8.

Or you could spend nearly the same as two 16 TB gold drives but use RAID 5 on 3 14TB drives for redundancy and striping performance...
The deal got worse as I went to 3 drives, so I stuck with 2. Now even if I wanted to I can't get another 14tb as it's out of stock.

Plus this seems better for my use case with constant recordings. I will just do RAID 1 as I intended to with the 14tbs as it's plenty of storage and I don't want to deal with the hassle of recovery if 1 drive goes out (it seems soo much easier with raid 1)

That's a nighmare. My PLEX is on a Synology DS1019+. I was backing up to an external 14tb WD drive, but was running out of room. I bought an Amazon Warehouse "like new" DS920+ for $311 + tax, and just bought these two 16TB drives. The DS920+ only appeared to have damaged packaging. I'm going to keep the SHR on the DS1019+ and use two drives in JBOD for bulk backup on the DS920+.

wd gold has a higher impact resistance and uses 30% less power. performance is pretty much the same.

Can anyone recommend an external enclosure that can support 16tb and maybe usb-c?
I would not recommend putting these in any external enclosure unless it has active cooling. These are datacenter drives and are intended to have adequate ventilation. They're 7200rpm and likely run warm.

Interesting, I created an account and got the 10% coupon email but during checkout it says it has already been redeemed. I created other accounts and I'm no longer getting the 10% coupon email, is anybody else seeing this?

I have been needing large drives for my Synology NAS and these drives hit the mark in durability, warranty, and price.
With taxes, 2% cc cash back, 5% web extension cash back, and discounts, the overall total for me was $513.01.
