If you use Gmail, many (but not all) sites will let you use Gmail's "plus sign" feature so you don't have to use a different email address. Use "[email protected]" for the address - everything from the plus sign to the at symbol gets ignored by Gmail (it delivers to "[email protected]"), but it looks like a different address to the site and you can filter on it in your mailbox. I'll usually use the site and date after the plus (something like "WestDigi20220205").

Not buying so don't know if this works here, but it's handy to know about.

4" is the drive dimension, but they're still 3.5" form factor. I believe 3.5" references the size of the platters in the drive.

On the subject of these drives though, at 7200rpm enterprise drives they're probably somewhat loud, and reviews seem to confirm that. They're intended to be in racks in a server farm where you won't hear them over the din of fans running. If you're buying these for a NAS, I'd only do that if your NAS is somewhere you can't hear it.

Mine shipped already but I made sure I posted the deal after UPS had the item LOL.

The only reason I can see them canceling is if they run out of stock but doubtful.

I guess the deal will only let you get 1 bundle of 2 drives? If I try to add quantities more than 2 to the cart there is no additional discount. I would like to get 4 of these for a Synology DS920+ enclosure I have. Do I need to make 2 separate orders to get the discount and use 2 separate email addresses to get the 10% off?

$/TB (14.85) after coupon and 12% PP seems the best value for any size HDD anywhere right now according to:

https://edwardbetts.com/price_per_tb/

I have a 4x4TB Plex server right now, but am balking at spending over a grand for 4 of these golds though.

Most of my video I store at 1080p X265 and bitrate of 1-2Mbps. Most of my files serve 55" or smaller TV screens.

I could obviously start doing 4k and/or higher 1080p bitrate files.

But barring a larger screen, will I even notice? Honestly, I've avoided 4k because while I can display it, I don't see the difference.

Larger HDDs will definitely cut down my curating time since I review and archive media fairly regularly to ensure I maintain adequate storage space.

I have room for two more HDDs so I could just slap a pair of the 16TBs in with an expectation to upgrade the remainder down the road. That seems a waste though as they will just serve as 4TB ones in the interim. Maybe I should just throw 2 more 4TBs in and leave it be.

Just talking it through in my head (and post).

Should I expect HDD prices to drop this year?

This isn't a hidden deal or price mistake. It's explicitly listed on the top of their Weekly Sales page.

I didn't get the 10% off email until I confirmed my email address through the 1st confirmation email, and then it came right away.

Can I buy this drive and SWAP it into MyBook 6TB drive?
Yes and no. WD normally prevents you from doing this by pairing the drive that comes with the enclosure with the SATA-to-USB adapter board that gets screwed onto the drive. If you try to use any other drive with that board/enclosure, it will fail. Luckily, hackers have figured out how to get around this limitation.

That being said, since this is a 7200 rpm drive, it will run warmer than the 6TB drive that you're replacing so I would keep an eye on the temps until you're satisfied that things are okay. Theoretically, it should be okay because the 18TB WD external drives also come with 7200 rpm drives but better safe than sorry.

If you are viewing the 55" from more than 8ft - now way you will notice 1080p to 4k BluRay disk different. HDR may be noticible.

However, ask yourself- will you always have 55" TV and will you regred that your media is 1080p when you get 75"+ one day?

I have these drives and they are fantastic. A little loud of first but after a couple of weeks it simmers down. Highly recommend these for NAS but especially DAS applications where you need fast read/write for professional multimedia creation in raids.

A warning to anyone buying from the Western digital store. Support is nearly non-existent. I ordered some 4 TB SSDs when they were on sale just after Black Friday. They only arrived a week ago. There's no phone number to call and the only way to get support is to file a ticket through their support system. Even then, I've only gotten three total replies despite numerous inquiries over the more than 2 month period.

Your latter question certainly applies...even if I were to stay at 1080p encoding. Its always nice to have the best possible original source...balancing cost of course.

As far as TV size, its highly unlikely I'll upsize for at least 4 years. I just bought a Sony 55 OLED a few months back. Before that I had a Plasma. I tend to keep displays awhile. So I could just wait until HDDs are cheaper in 4 years. But then, all my older media would be at lesser quality.

I have done some 1080p HDR encodes and can notice the difference at times. I'm torn on HDR. It can look good, but other times I'm not sure I like literal eye searing brightness changes on some sources. I do *think* I prefer 10bit color and always choose that regardless.

Unfortunately, I also have ended up with bad encodes with HDR. In light to medium grays, there can sometimes be color pulsing from a neutral gray to warmer gray and back in static backgrounds. Its really noticeable to me and incredibly distracting. Hopefully, Ill figure out what I'm doing wrong with my HDR encodes someday.
