If you've ever had an accident on a bike (I did recently, and it was bad), you would never ever consider something like this.
Take this posters advice and pick up a trailer.
—double your width
—nearly double your length
—add a lot of weight and rolling resistance
—require storage and some maintenance
—can be stiflingly hot for the kid (even wide open)
The correct answer is "both!" but these are still really worth considering. Just ride conservatively due to a little higher Cg and exposure.

The Weehoo is by far the best pedal trailer (or any type of single trailer) you can get (IMHO). It is really fantastic to pull. The kid sits more recumbent style and can be strapped down. Thy can pedal to help or just ride (great for little ones). it's the same width of the bike which makes it much more streamlined then other trailers. It is also fully adjustable to any size and the toddler powered pedal assist does help a little on big hills and it makes them feel independent. They are expensive but you can find them on facebook all the time for > 1/2 the price. Mine was a 4-5yr old used one and works as well as the day it was purchased.
We use the double pull behind when only one of us takes the kids out, it's cold (plastic cover), or we are going to the store so we can hall stuff back. Also bought used for < 1/2 price.
Though in my experience, watching people with things like these, they tend to ride much more conservatively than others with trailers because they almost have to since bike handling is so negatively impacted.
I think more kids get hurt when the bike is stopped, it leans a bit, the parent can't hold it because of the high mounted weight of the kid, over it goes, and bam, head injury.
